One of my friend has taken A levels as a private candidate at the British Council. Can someone tell me how his application would be treated in US. I mean that he doesn't has school activities, thought his achievements outside the school are good. His grades are also perefct.

I wont think it would matter much since they dont consider much of the local schools either. Just a few tips (although I am from a school):

Make sure you include a profile of the teacher writing your recommendation: his past expereince, educational qualifications etc because that is how they will know its ur teacher and ur next door neighbour writing the recommendation.

Try to get a recommendation from the person responsible for your biggest EC (for example soccer coach or someone who helped in ur research). Try to authenticate ur ECs if possible (as you said you wanted that IIT person to check ur research n stuff).

Take part in internationally-recognised ECs such as MUNs, Intel thingies etc

Best of Luck!!!

just out of curiosity, what is a private canidate?

a student who takes external examinations (such as the A level or the AP) without studying formally in a school

The friend i am talking about(Its not me) had studied till Grade 10 in a private school, Then his father was posted to a remote location where schools were not so good, He then decided to appear as private cabdidate, as teacher recs are concerned he could get it from his Ex School. His only concern is that he will have to compete with students who had many oppurtubities in various things(MUN, School election etc.). Will he be looked down coz he is private candidate. I have heard about Home-schooled candidates being discriminated in college Admisions.

Can somebody please answer the questions above.

Thanks all,i posted my message on home scholar forum and got answers to my query.
Best of Luck to all
