Private Certified Housing vs. University Housing

Hey guys so I have been looking into staying at Newman Hall which is a private certified dorm that is very nice and very close to the quad but I also have been considering just applying for university housing. I want to live somewhere where people are going to be very social because I am very excited about meeting new people! I have been told that if you live in PCH that people are a lot less social that the UH and this worries me a lot. Has anyone on here lived in Newman or any PCH? What are your opinions??

yeah if you’re looking for being pretty social defitinely go with university housing at the six pack. people always have their doors open and it’s super easy to meet people that way.

Six Pack is very social. I live in Bromley Hall (PCH) and have made great friends there. My floor isn’t very social but I met a bunch of other people on different floors and I love it. Food sucks tho…

My son has lived in Newman for the last two years in both a North double and a Single (4 br) Suite. Newman’s location can’t be beat, and my son has no problem meeting friends. The dorms are just one locale where you can meet people and develop friendships. There’s the hundreds of clubs that exist, the libraries, rec centers, and, of course, classes, where you can get study groups together, etc. Your housing preference should be based on a variety of factors, including your ability to make friends, but in reality, your ability to meet new people and make friends is based on you more than any other factor. I think Newman’s location is a big factor, as are the size of the rooms, and the fact that the bathrooms are private/suite (shared with no more than three others). When you can roll out of bed at 7:50 like my son has at times and be at an 8am class in English, or Henry on time, that’s a definite plus for Newman.

Remember, as a freshman, most of your classes will be on the quad, an you can get an apartment Junior year that’s close to the Engineering Quad, if your an Engineering UG like my son.

And my son tells me the food is cafeteria quality at Newman too. No better, or worse than anywhere else.

My daughter lived in PCH her first 2 years. It was a great location and set-up. Living room/kitchen, parking garage, 2 baths and 5-6 students per suite. Most of her friends lived in various PCH around campus. The only down side is that your meal plan is only for your own PCH housing.

Thanks for the comments and opinions!!

I would recommend staying in University housing, it is far easier to meet people. This is currently my second year living in ISR and although the dorm has a reputation for being antisocial, it is still not too hard to meet people. Another advantage of living in the dorms is that you can eat at any of the University dining halls, which makes it easier to meet people.

My dd will be living in Newman this coming fall. We have known many people who have lived here and there isn’t a problem at all meeting friends. They have things going all of the time. I agree the not being able to eat at the other cafs is a bummer, but back in the dark ages when I went there, I didn’t frequent the other dorms too much. I lived in FAR and that was the main reason I ate at ISR now and then. With Newman being so close to everything, that isn’t too much of an issue to run back to grab a meal.
