Private College Advisor

Has anyone used a private college advisor? I really need help with the directions of my essays. Nobody in my family has experience and I am getting nervous. What should I look for in them? Can anyone recommend anybody (I am in the NYC area)?

I personally think a private college advisor is a waste of time and money. Write your essays about something you care about, something you're passionate about. Make it personal (but not too personal) and use anecdotes and examples that show how you have changed for the better, or displayed leadership, or how you'd make a good match for the school. Make it unique and original, but not outrageous.

Think of CC and everyone on it as your new college advisors. It's free, and it's available anywhere with internet access.

Use your teachers too. Chances are, they'll be able to edit your essays and will know what they're talking about, and you won't have to worry about people stealing them if you post them online.

Yeah, dude, don't pay for a college advisor... most kids who get into top schools really laugh at those who spent thousands of dollars on someone to mold them into the 'perfect college candidate' when they'll most likely get rejected. If you want help with your essays, just go to an english teacher. If you don't trust your own teachers for some good advice (which happens) go to someone you respect for their intelligence, or even ask a local uni instructor or something. It's worth a shot.

I guess I can do it on my own, I just feel a little overwhelmed

That's the point of the entire college process. I think...

=] Just take it easy Louis. :D Just gotta have a little faith.
