Private colleges-$30k+-what to do for ADHD student

My daughter is a junior and her GPA is about 2.2. She has severe ADHD and decided to stop taking her meds this year.

I've done a bit of research and it appears that the only colleges which would be an option are private colleges-most average around $30,000. We do NOT have that kind of money.

She can possibly bring her GPA up a bit, but we're a bit panicked about her college options. She is just now taking it all seriously.

Any suggestions? Thoughts?

She wants to play softball for college. We're just at a loss!

Thanks in advance!

How about a community college? If she does well, she can transfer.

Why did she stop taking her meds? Was it because of side effects or something else? It sounds like she may have some personal or medical issues she needs to work through – and the fact that she just now is taking college seriously sounds like she isn’t sure what she wants.

Would she be eligible for a program like AmeriCorps or City Year? It would give her the experience of living away from home but would give her a break from school work. A lot of students find that spending some time in the “real world” is helpful for finding out what their strengths are, and the community service aspect might give her some motivation for possible careers.

I’ll be following this. My son is a junior. He got four C’s in sophomore year when he tried a new ADD med, because of he couldn’t eat or sleep much , and he was playing a LOT of soccer. It was also the year his dad significantly backed off from monitoring his completing and turning in homework. If we are lucky, he will have a 3.0 by the end of this year, but no AP’s or honors. He wants to play soccer in college, and we are looking at California State Colleges here in California. We could probably make the private school money work, but are not sure it would be a good investment…yet… Fortunately, he thinks it is CRAZY to be looking at colleges costing what the privates do.

Why do you say that?

Apply for scholarships then if your son wants to go to a Private College.

ThreeRedheads, if you are in the northeast, the schools you probably should look at are Landmark and Curry.

Landmark’s “list” price is way higher than $30,000/year.

When you say you don’t “have that kind of money”, is this after getting an estimated financial aid package (such as they have on [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) ) ?

The less income your family has, the more Aid you would qualify for; although I realize there are plenty of reasons that this still may not be affordable.
