I called housing and they said I may have some trouble finding public housing.
What are the good private dorms?

towers is awesome!

I'll likely be living in Towers next year. I want the 2x2 XL room so I can have some good parties in there. I'm looking forward to it.

Castilian and Dobie Center are also conveniently located private dorms.

UT publishes a Housing Guide at its website for international students, but it works for anyone. You can find it here: http://www.utexas.edu/international/isss/housing/lt_housing. The only other private dorms not mentioned yet are Goodall-Wooten and Texana (and Hardin House if you are female).

My opinion regarding the private dorms, for what its worth (maybe nothing), is:

Towers has the best rooms by far, but it's loud and can be hard to sleep and study there, even on the quiet floors.

Castilian has a great location, nice rooms, and nice people but it is close quarters so it's important that you like the people you room with.

Dobie is also a great location, especially for the business school. The rooms are small and institution-like, but you get used to it.

Hardin House is an excellent choice for females but hard to get into because it's in such demand.

I don't know about Goodall-Wooten or Texana.

how do the prices of private dorms compare to public

Last weekend, I took a tour of both Towers and Dobie. I also managed to eat at both cafeterias.

In browsing material they provided, it appears the cost are fairly equal for a 2/2 suite. The rooms at Towers were slightly larger, with massive closets and balconies. The food was average and comparable to the on-campus cafeterias. The walk to campus was definately a good distance, not sure how they were counting "3 blocks." The place was definately older than Dobie, but I think the main attraction to Towers is the lax security and party atmosphere. The courtyard with pool, deck, and hottub could definately be home to some late nights.

On the other end, Dobie was a quieter, cleaner, closer to campus, and all around superior to Towers. The side suites were a little narrow, but the corner suites had a better sized living space. The food was excellent with a large selection and variety. It didn't seem like cafeteria food in any way. The only drawback I can note, is the 28 or so floors with only three elevators. We waited for a while on a Saturday, so I can only imagine the scene for 9 o'clock class.

I suggest visiting both locations to get the feel of what better suits you. I also considered the Castillian, but their rooms lacked a living area which ruled them off my list. Hope this helped.

Towers elevators are even worse, Dobie's moves pretty quickly for 20+ floors. There always seems to be one of 3 broken at Towers.

Also, about Towers, I wouldn't suggest anyone ever go swimming in that pool.

Living in dobie freshman year would have just been the same as pretty much anywhere else. But I can say that Towers would have been a completely different first-year experience...for the better.

What's wrong with the pool at towers?

I was born in TX and now live in KY, so i dont know anyone. Is the roomate selection random or is their a profiler that you go through? OR, should i just get a single?

you fill out a roommate preference card...
and whats the deal with the towers pool?
if it is a crappy pool, theres always the brand new one being opened near gregory gym

im living in towers next year.

im excited.

i hope i made the right choice.

i had no clue about these things cause im from california and dont know anyone at the university so i dont know what is the best option, but from what everyone said in this thread, I think i made the right choice

hey man, me and you both. I'm at the Towers next year too, and I sincerely hope I made the right choice. Can it be as bad (loud, dirty) as some people say? I hope not for my sanity's sake.

I'm seriously considering filling out an application for Towers. Is it too late? I don't want to spend the 50 bux if it is. Is the social environment at the Towers comparable to the on-campus dorms? The whole reason I am living in the dorms is because I want to be in a friendly environment where I can meet new people. I imagine that in a place like Jester, that would certainly be the case. I don't want to end up in a a dorm where people keep to themselves. I just want to be in an environment condusive to friendship because, after all, U.T. has tens of thousands of interesting people and I'd like to meet as many as possible. I'm definitely worried because I don't want to end up hanging out with the same high school people when I get to U.T. (not that I don't plan on still hanging with my 2 very good friends who are going to be attending).

I heard the towers was and hardin are already full.

I'm considering Dobie or the Castilian...really leaning towards Dobie since it looks like it's right on campus. Does anyone know if Dobie has any vacancy for a double?

I'm sure Dobie still has double occupancy rooms. With 27 floors and housing for almost 1000 students, I bet there is something left. I'm going to be living there in the fall, but I have a private room.

You may not get your first-choice room, but I'm sure if you want to live there you wont have a problem getting a lease.

thanks bs to ut.

Since I turned in my housing app late (I didn't think I would get in), I'm screwed for on-campus housing. Me with 3 other girls? Yeah right.

Besides, it seems like some of the off-campus housing options are at reasonable price and are of equal or better quality.
