Private High School Rankings

Does anyone know a site that lists the best Private (PREP) high schools in NY? I'm not talking about boarding school, just private/prep. Thanks

Well......you use the term New York but that could be many cities and you don't want a boarding school so somehow you need to arrive at the school everyday. Is your family planning to move to the city of the best school for you? What city are you speaking about? I am sure you can find lots of help on CC but you need to provide the information to get the help.

I'm a senior in high school, and I go to a Jesuit Prep school in the bronx (Fordham Prep) - I was just wondering what its ranking was among prep schools in the City/State. I know its very competitive and respected.

who the hell cares about rankings.. btw im warning now im in a bad mood...but seriously....rankings are useless....yeah yeah

While the Worth Magazine list is by no means the end-all and be-all of high school rankings (especially with it's statistical inaccuracies) it is one aspect to consider when trying to figure out where fordham stands. I will list all the NYC and NY schools in order that are on the top 100

Brearley
Collegiate
Dalton
Spence
Horace Mann
Trinity

Dammit, as i started typing this, i realized no list I found went below top 12 on the list. (The list being the top 100 in the nation) All I can tell you parikhs is that for the 12 schools sending the largest percentages of their senior classes to HYP, 6 of them are in the 5 boroughs, and Fordham is not one of them.

Okay, thanks..I didn't think Fordham was top 12 or whatever, but it is private and somewhat better than coming from a public school around here. Does what high school you come from matter?

yes, it does matter, and yes, you are correct it is better than a public school, but most of the other private schools are probably better than fordham, don't know, can't say I know much about it.

Just because your school is private does NOT make it better than any public......Stuyvesant HS is one example.

I completely agree with hazmat. Just because a school is private does not mean it's better than a public school. Many are, but many public schools are better as well depending on where you live. Where I grew up the private schools has trouble staying in business because the public schools were so strong. (In fact, the private school where I went in first grade closed when I was in 4th because of that fact. I transferred to public in 2nd grade.) Where I live now there are several excellent private schools, but there are also about 4 excellent public districts where students can get just as good of an education if not better. However, there are also areas where you couldn't find a single public school that holds a candle to the private schools. It all depends on location and the individual schools being considered.

OP is from the Bronx area of NYC......and I am guessing he knows nothing about the magnet schools which are public and which have tremendous reputations.

I go to a public school system and our average SAT score total is 1112. Some private schools have a smaller average! I'm not saying that private school is bad, but its not the choice my family made. To tell you the truth I hope to be going to a boarding school next year.

I applied to Bronx Science and got in...but overall I didn't like the school..location, the school itself wasn't maintained, and the people aren't my type. I resorted to paying 10k a year to go to Fordham Prep which I feel more comfortable at.

For most NYers, when they say "public school" they mean general admittance public schools, i.e. schools like Hunter, Stuy, Bronx Sci, and Brook Tech, do not count, since you need to take an entrance exam in order to get in. If you exclude these 3 pseudo-public/private schools, I think it's pretty safe to say that pretty much any private school in the city is better than any public school.

hotchkisshopefull, where do you live, many areas have great public school systems, with terrible private schools around them, NYC is not the case.

I live near cleveland..... It's a subarb- yeah, I would be pretty dumb to call Cleveland City schools good! lol

Horace Mann is the best...majority agrees.
