How much nicer are the private residence halls compared to the regular dorms on the Berkeley campus? They seem more expensive, so are they just for rich people?

Berkeley has private residence halls?

most people don't realize this until it's too late. if you're on financial aid, not living on a campus dorm will lower your budget by 4-5 thousand dollars. If you're not, there are some low priced dorms, not many at all. Check www.telegraphcommons.com That's the main one people hear about. the westminster house is on the expensive end. WH probably charges the most of all places I've seen.

calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu allows you to view some private dorms, housing, apartments for $20. Craigslist is a free alternative to that.

yeah, westminster house is pretty expensive.

Most of the housing at Berkeley is pretty expensive. What about when you compare the university owned housing to the other privately owned housing? Well, it seems like many of the private ones seem less than or similar in cost to many of the university owned options. Compare, say, the mini-suites or foothill to the options at Westminster South. Food might change things, but it seems like Westminster is less than some university owned options, the same as others. Perhaps a bit less expensive than some, but is it ever significantly so?

Many (probably most) schools have some local landlords that serve exclusively, or strongly cater to students. So while the school doesn't technically own or run these private lots, for all practical purposes, they basically can be thought off as part of school housing.

Does anyone know anything personally or heard anything about telegraph commons?
