I am a US Citizen living in India and I have applied for the Class of 2022. I was going through several private scholarship portals and found that my international address did not get accepted when I tried to create an account. What should I do? Are there special websites for this?
Thanks
Look for the Contact Us information at each website, and then send them an email. Let them know you are a US citizen abroad, and ask if their scholarship is open to applicants like you. It is possible that some are restricted to US applicants resident in US states and territories.
I will do that and let you know. I also wanted to know if there will be scholarships available for fall 2018 after March 2018.
I don’t know about that. Good question.
The good news for you of course is that there are no barriers for employment once you are in the US. So you can check for local part-time job opportunities near the places you are thinking about. Depending on your situation, it may make most sense to move here and work for a while before starting college.
Please make sure you have all of the funding sorted out before you commit to study anywhere. You don’t want to start and then find out that you don’t have enough money to finish the program or the even year.
Do you have an acceptance? Can you afford it?
@Sybylla , I have been accepted into five colleges and am awaiting more decisions. As such without aid, I can’t afford college but if I don’t get scholarships, the only way to pay is via loans and I am not hell bent on taking them. That is why I am asking about scholarships.
Which schools, did you apply for FA?
Many US universities have scholarships for US citizens, even if they live abroad. The number one source of scholarships is the college itself. You need to apply strategically to universities that either offer need based aid for your parents’ income, or merit aid for your stats.
Where have you applied? There may still be time to find a few more places that will offer scholarships. If all fails, you can wait for the May NACAC list, which lists colleges that miscalculated yield and have places open.
The very best scholarship aid comes from the colleges to,which you have been accepted…
So.
- Did you apply for need based aid? On time.
- Did you receive any financial aid awards from any of the colleges to,which you applied?
- How much CAN your parents contribute annually to your college education?
Yes…there are some huge outside scholarships…but the deadlines for those have long since passed.
It looks like you have been accepted to the University of Michigan. That school awards precious little in merit aid…and it’s extremely competitive to get it. In addition, Michigan does not guarantee to meet full need for out of state students with incomes above a certain amount @billcsho can elaborate on this.
My understanding is the Michigan financial aid awards will be released soon. So…you might just have to be patient…and wait and see. Hoping you submitted your FAFSA and Profile…on time.
UMich merit scholarship notice is rolling out. You should receive an award notice by mid March if you do get one of the big one ($20k or more per year for OOS). Their financial aid package for EA admitted students will start coming out this week or next week but it may take a few weeks to complete particularly for those still have document pending. Check your WA page for that. OOS students with less than $90k family income and $50k asset will have their need met by UMich.
@billcsho my parents’ income falls under that category and the net price calculator also shows that most of my costs will be covered by the university. @Sybylla I applied to seven schools under EA out of which I have been accepted into 4, Deferred and then accepted at UMich, Deferred at Georgia Tech, and Denied at Stanford.
Great. If your family do not have complicated financial situation like self employed, the NPC is pretty accurate. The net met for OOS at UMich is new this year. Congrats.
Don’t. Feel too bad that you were rejected by GT…as. An OOS student, you would not have gotten much aid.
As for private scholarships for citizens living abroad… it’s unlikely that there are many/any private entities setting aside scholarship money for such students. There would be little incentive to create such awards.
<<<my parents’="" income="" falls="" under="" that="" category="">>>
Are your parents self-employed? Or do they work for companies where they receive paychecks and there is a firm record of their incomes?
UMich often asks for documents for verification and they don’t use IDOC even they use CSS profile. Let’s hope the NPC is accurate for OP as that may be the best deal for him.
@mom2collegekids , my parents run a startup together…
@mom2collegekids I have been deferred at GT. Although what you’re saying seems about right, I still am hopeful!
If your parents own their own business…that adds a whole layer on to the need based financial aid calculation.
@thumper1 Even though they own the business, considering that we’re based in India and the company isn’t very big, I don’t think it’s comparable to the US. Am I right?
It doesn’t matter where the business is located.
The value of the business is considered. If they take business deductions…those might not be considered by the college.
