Private Scholarships

I'm appyling to a ton of scholarships (as many as I can) mainly because it will increase my chances of getting one. I was wondering for scholarships that offer like $500 or $2000 are they really competitive? I know some people who got some a couple of years back and got like $1000 and stuff. Most of the ones that I'm applying to require an essay and thats all. They don't seem to be based on tests scores and grades and stuff so how does that work? Does it make them more competitive or less?

If the scholarships you are applying for are say, from a fraternal organization ie Masons, they generally like an essay because they "get to know the applicant". Use your applications to answer the question or topic they require, but also do your best to make a personal connection. Scholarship committees like to give money to people they feel they know - not just a listing of accomplishments by some annonymous kid. :) By not requiring GPA or test scores students of all levels are given the same chance. Local scholarship competitions can be easier to win because they may take a little more effort to find and usually fewer students apply. Good Luck!
