Private Universities and URM

my cusin got into Stanford w/ a 2000, 4 yrs of bball, and 4 AP classes. How far will URM go?

If Stanford looked only at scores, sports participation, and raw # of APs maybe I'd be concerned. That's not the whole picture for your "cusin."

anyway can you find statistics out there on how many URMs applied to so and so college and how many were accepted?

I mean, does URM really really help that much, if you have another hook, scores like other "white applicants" and a few meaningful ECs, does that mean you're in, regardless of other stuff . . like essay, etc?

Being a URM won't soley get an applicant into an elite college.

Absent a single overwhelming talent, and assuming minimally adequate grades /test scores ..... being a URM is the single most critical factor in acceptance into a school like Stanford. This was brought out starkly in the Univ of michigan affirmative action case. I don't have the exact stats ... but something like 75% of URM's were accepted into the university with qualifications that would signal a presumptive rejection for whites and Asians.

There's a thing called evidence, blink, and you don't have it.

URM helps a ton for top universities

You guys have an exceptionally flawed perspective of affirmative action. Regardless of what you deem "reverse discrimination," Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford aren't going to accept a black kid with a C average and a 1900 on his/her SATs just to be politically correct.

well 1900 and an A- average and they just might

he took AP Bio and AP Cal AB, he got a 5 and 4... and im pretty sure he maintained straight A's... probably w/ an exception of a B or two.. he was like representative for athletics.. and uhh i guess good essays and recs... and african american..

^All A's, yo. This gets me every time, cause my GPA (3.73uw, 4.0w--for Stanford, 3.6uw, 4.0w) is simply not up to par with other accepted African Americans, which often scares me.

Anywayz, an African American or any other URM with close to a 4.0 and above 2000 on the SATs has a great shot at any college, but the high GPA is what really seals the deal.

lol, I think white kinds get better treatment in CA colleges than asian kids

umm... those arent bad stats, i have seen white kids get into stanford with those exact stats and one or two leadership EC's

I think the whole URM thing is going far beyond what it needs to. Its really irritating.

Did you mean that 75% of the accepted URMs had qualifications that would be a "deny" for whites and asians? Or do you mean 75% of URM applicants were admitted, and some proportion of them had "deny" qualifications?

why does this keep coming up? i feel like almost everytime someone provides an example, it always ends up coming out skewed. scores and gpa are not everything (thank god). there is more to a person.

go to page 2 of this link

It has the acceptance rate of african americans at top universities and the regular acceptance rate. Its from 2005 tho...so its not brand new

Thanks pal ^ :)

Have any of you guys ever considered what would happen if asians were actually counted as URMs?
