I am stumped about privates for my S. So far he has only applied to large OOS publics (we live in California). He is a 2.9/24 ACT/1120 SAT (taking again in 2 weeks). He has to have sports teams to watch (he plays football now), which is why he's been focused on large state schools. Any suggestions for privates that might interest him? We don't need any financial aid.

Assuming he wants big time football, there are few privates (other than USC, Notre Dame, Stanford) which can afford it. Syracuse is one.

His admission chances may be best where he offers geographic diversity–Clemson; Kansas; U Pittsburgh; South Carolina; Florida State

University of Denver? No football, but hockey and lacrosse are huge.

HIs GPA will hurt him at most of those public suggestions above…FSU, Clemson, etc, Those schools expect much higher GPAs…

However…

What is your son’s weighted GPA? And does that 2.9 GPA include ALL of his classes (including PE and electives)?

IF including PE and electives his weighted GPA goes to 3.0, then he’ll get accepted to UAlabama. Even if he’s still shy of a 3.0, he probably would still get accepted since he’s from Calif, and Bama loves having kids from each state! Bama has kids from all 50 states.

We’re from California (Orange County natives - I’m a UCI grad), and our 2 boys go to Alabama. They love it. Strong academics, gorgeous campus (makes Calif campuses look pathetic!!) They love Crimson Tide football ! :)

Look at these links and see what you think… :)

I don’t know what your son’s major might be, but Bama has an awesome business school, as well as other majors.

:)

BTW…OOS cost to attend (tuition, room, board, books, misc) is about $31k per year. That includes the price of the new “super suites” residence halls where each kid has a private room within a 4 bedroom “super suite” that also has a kitchenette, living room, and 2 bathrooms.

If he is interested in engineers, how about NYU-Poly and VT?

NYU-Poly offers nice merit-based scholarships. If he submits the Dean’s Application, he will receive his scholarship award value in the mail with the admissions decision two weeks after processing.

Elizabeth…

did you get my PM?

University of Dayton.

[University of Dayton](http://www.udayton.edu/)

^^ Division 1 FCS with a good team; no football scholarships. Fantastic place if you like basketball.

Thanks for the suggestions. Dayton appears to be a Catholic school, which wouldn’t work for us, as we are Jewish. He has applied to 14 schools - including Alabama - and my hope is that the odds will be with him and he will get accepted to a few schools that he really likes - he has been accepted to Northern Arizona U, but its not a top choice. I am so glad he is my youngest and we will be DONE with this - until grad school of course!

UD is Catholic (Jesuit I think) but that shouldn’t stop you. While religion is required in the curriculum, it is very broad. For instance, DW attended Xavier and took religions of the world. People of many religions attend schools like this.
