Pro/Con of Greek Life

I've been thinking about the idea of joining a fraternity. I'm going to be a freshman this fall. I'm not sure if its right for me and want some opinions from people who are already in frats, and who are willing to give me some information.

I like the idea of a brotherhood, people watching each others back, and older friends to give you advice and recommendations. At the same time I don't want to be in a situation where I have to do something I don't want to do, and by that I mean illegal things, or something really stupid.

I've heard stories on both sides of the extreme. About making lifelong friends and connections that further your career, and about the frat brothers that got arrested for helping an older member cover up a crime.

I'm guessing these things don't happen all the time, but I'm just not sure what to expect. All I'm hearing is the extremes from anyone I ask, either its the best thing in the world, or the worst.

I've checked out some of the frats on campus and narrowed it down to a few I have an interest in: Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Alpha Mu, and Alpha Epsilon Pi. If your in one of these fraternities, I would especially like your opinion on what you like or dislike about them.

Also wanted to add, that the three fraternities I listed were Jewish fraternities. I've read on this forum in different places that Jewish fraternities are different from most fraternities, but nobody says how. If someone could elaborate on what is so special about Jewish fraternities, besides the obvious that most/all members will be Jewish, it would be appreciated.

My friend is in Sammys, Sigma Alpa Mu, he's really cool. Umm, their frat rooms are pretty ghetto though, however their pledgeship i hear is among the easiest, which is still pretty tough... are you jewish since I think one of those frats only accepts jewish members.

I am Jewish, thus my interest in Jewish fraternities.

Can you elaborate on why you think Sigma Alpha Mu is ghetto, and what's involved in the pledgeship?

I can't tell you about pledgeship, since its suppose to be a "secret". However, the rooms are quite crowded (its worse then your dorm rooms) and the beds have all sorts of interesting carvings, hence thats why its the most "ghetto" house, but i am sure the common space is nice (never paid attention to the commons).
