Probable "C" grade in a course required for UCI TAG

So, this isn’t my situation (because unfortunately I’m stuck on the UCI waitlist) but a friend of mine is facing a “C” in her electromagnetism physics class in which she needs a “B” in order to satisfy her TAG agreement. My question is, what happens if she gets “C” instead of a “B”? Will her TAG be voided, or will UCI be willing to work with her and somehow accept/overlook that grade? She’s a mechanics major, and not a EE.

I was also curious if she just accepts her admission now, then applies for a change of major to something that isn’t impacted like mathematics or chem, will this grade be less important? Our drop deadline is fast approaching (this Sunday), and getting a “C” on her transcript AND losing her spot at UCI would be devastating. If it’s a no go she still has time to drop and retake the class this fall, and simply re-TAG this coming November. Taking the “live to fight another day” strategy is definitely the nuclear option, but keeping her GPA (and sanity) intact is also pretty important.

Any input from the community would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The reason I’ve posted this here and not gone to UCI directly is because she just found out, and of course there’s no one manning the phones in the admissions office at this hour. Plus there are lots of very bright, and kind folks on this forum.

She will probably lose her TAG. They’re pretty strict with keeping up the gpa. She might still be able to get in without the tag but thats only a maybe. If she truly wants to go to UCI and not take any chances then she should drop. I am in EM and it is pretty tough.

Hey @nissincupnoodle you’re a fellow waitlisted EE, yes? Thanks for the input! It’s not her overall or major GPA in jeopardy, she’s just realistically just not going to make the grade UCI wants in this particular class. She’ll just have to be upfront with them and see what they have to say tomorrow.

Best of luck to you on the waitlist my friend. Hope to have a coffee with you on campus and talk all things electricity in the fall.

Does it say in her contract? Or her major gpa will drop under the requirement? I think as long as those 3 things arnt a problem she will be fine.
