I am a rising senior. Hopefully, I will be named Valedictorian at the end of senior year (I've been ranked 1 since freshman year :/ ). The problem is, I don't know whether I have the authority to put that on my college apps.

If not, I sometimes read other threads where people seem to say that they were able to put being Val. as part of their academic honors. So how are they able to put that on their app, if they haven't even received that recognition yet? (Apps are due before anyone could possibly get that award. For me, I wouldn't find out till maybe a month before graduation, like May? And apps are usually due around January).

I know I must be missing something here. So please, if anyone could help me out...

well, when your counselor fills out his/her part of the application, doesn't she write down your rank? that is, if your school ranks (which I'm assuming it does from your post), and doesn't use deciles.
I don't see the point of writing it down twice.

The thing is, I've read in some other posts how some people put Val. as part of the academic honors. That's why I have a problem. You can't really say your Val. until you receive the award at the end of the year, right?

don't put it...that's just lame, especially if your school already will be indicating your rank.

people who put it are probably just trying to fill up spots in their application where they have nothing else. you can use that space more productively.

Considering that Valedictorian is determined at the end of your Senior year, it strikes me as presumptious (I know you don't mean to be). If you're ranked 1 when it's time for your counselor to submit info, that will suffice. The class of 09 valedictorian has not and will not be determined until next June -- way past the deadlines of your college apps. Don't do it.

Our school freezes grades and determines valedictorian after the first semester is over (Dec.), so that we know who is ranked where for college purposes :) Knowing that some schools are like mine means that the college won't know if you were already frozen as valedictorian, so they won't be able to say it was presumptuous. If you hold the rank at the time of writing the application, then I say you are qualified to write it in.

Agree with highopes. Let the counselor put your rank down. You have limited space on the Common App to list academic honors - focus on the ones that won't already be mentioned somewhere else in your application.

I'm gonna take your advice and not put it down. It does make sense that there's really no point to put it down, now that I know that the fact should be more than apparent when the counselor does her part. Thanks for all the info!

ALSO, really off topic, but what is priority application deadline?
I understand EA/ED/RD, but what the heck is priority application?
Does it help in any way? Is it binding, or restrictive in any way?
