Probably my final chance post (I'll chance back)

I just finished my junior year and got the exact grades I wanted for this semester. It was a tough semester but I got through it and am happy with the results. Anyways, here are the stats after this semester:

GPA: 3.66 UW, 4.5 weighted

ACT: 32 composite, 34 english, 33 math, 32 reading, 30 science, 9 essay (will probably retake until I get 33 or 34)

EC’s: Captain of state-championship winning varsity swim/dive team, started own cancer-fundraising club which has raised over 1000 dollars for St. Jude hospital and UNC’s cancer hospital (starting new fundraiser that will raise a couple of thousand dollars), ambassador for my high school, NHS member, cross country (hopefully captain next year), BETA club. Also trying to volunteer at UNC Lineberger Cancer Center or a similar organization. I have a job as the head dive coach at a local pool, which I have to work with small children and teach them how to dive.

Essays: writing about a very unique talent of mine for CA and will have my AP english teacher help me edit and perfect them. I’m a very passionate writer and could effectively convey who I am and what my values are through my essays.

Teacher recs: getting programming and APUSH teachers to write them. I have a good relationship with both of them so I believe that they will be good.

Class rank: we do class rank by weighted GPA and mine just increased to a 4.5 from a 4.45 so I’m probably in the top 15-20% of my class now

Rigor: half of my classes are AP and I take more AP and honors classes than most people at my school

White male from North Carolina. I go to the best high school in the entire state.

some schools I’m applying to:
UNC
UVA
Wake Forest
UT-Austin
UGA
Vanderbilt
Duke
NYU
Columbia
Virginia Tech
Harvard (lol)

Yeah, I know a lot of these are reaches but I want to get some outside input on my chances of admissions to these schools. I’m applying to Harvard because if the microscopic chance that I get in happens, then I’m going to freakin’ Harvard soo yeah… Thanks, guys!

Bump

UNC: Match
UVA: High Match
Wake Forest: Match/Safety for you
UT Austin: Match
UGA: Match
Vanderbilt: High Match/Low Reach
Duke: With increased ACT scores it could be a Low Reach, Otherwise its a Reach
NYU: Match
Columbia: Huge Reach
VT: Safety
Harvard: Don’t even apply

I disagree with @SternBusiness about Wake Forest because that is not even a safety for people with 3.9 UW even if their EC’s are spectacular.

UT Austin is not a match for anyone OOS.

UNC - low match
UVA - high match low reach oos
Wake Forest - they really have to like you to take you so I would say high match
UT-Austin - match
UGA - low match
Vanderbilt - reach
Duke - reach
NYU - match
Columbia - reach
Virginia Tech - safety
Harvard (lol) - reach (apply its worth it if you get in and if not, their loss)

Right now, I’m mainly focused on getting into UNC. I want to double major in compsci and business and they have an awesome program for that. I’m fine getting denied from everywhere else as long as i get into Carolina

Okay so what’s the deal with UT Austin? I have had people tell me that it’s a low match and have had people tell me it’s a high reach. They have good CS and business programs so that’s one of my top choices.

Your a good candidate. The issue is that the vast majority of students admitted are auto-admits in the top 8% of the class (2016) or other top performing TX residents. CS and the business school are in top demand. While you might get accepted with your stats, it is possible you won’t get into CS or business. You can/should try but don’t count UT as a match. It is also expensive OOS and you might find a better value elsewhere.

For duke I would say its a bit of a reach just because UW gpa is a bit on the lower end of the scale. If you guys dont mind could you chance me.

Ok so UT cause I’m a Texas resident.
You probably won’t get into Business. You could try but I highly doubt it. UT Business acceptance rates are around the same as overall Ivy acceptance rates. But I believe many of the other commentors are overlooking your ECs so a comment on that: yours are great! 80% of people probably don’t have hat many great ECs as you so you might be able to get into your choice colleges. I don’t know about the Ivies or UT though…

As long as you are not applying for Mccombs then it is a match. For Mccombs I do believe you would still have a shot. Do you have naviance? Look on naviance for yourself so you can get a general view of how hard it is. I know that from my school (very competitive public school) the average acceptance is a 3.85 (W) and 1950 SAT. Although only 15-20 have applied total from my school, I personally know a few that did make it into Mccombs. I don’t have the experience of being a Texas resident, but judging by the stats admitted at my school, I think you have more then a good shot.

@SternBusiness Now that mention it, I have started applying through Naviance and I believe it glitches very often. I know there is something wrong with the teacher recommendation part but I’m not so sure. All I’ve done is familiarize myself with the site so far. I haven’t requested applications though. Would you care to take a look?

@marie122 How would I look?

@SternBusiness That I’m not really sure. I just thought that you might have heard something about it… or how to get around it. The real problem is that now Naviance does not limit your teachers to certain colleges. Example,
If you ask your calculus and chemistry teachers to send recs to A&M Dwight and your business and stats teachers for UT McCombs, your chemistry teacher could accidently send it to McCombs and it couldn’t be withdrawn. And is the rec limit was reached, your business and stats teachers could not submit the recs to McCombs. It happened to many students last year and the glitch is still active so I’m just worried.

@SternBusiness our school “can’t afford” naviance but just spent 15,000 on new goal posts for the football team. Makes sense, right?

@agc1998 Wow that kinda sucks. I didn’t know it cost the school system that much.

@SternBusiness me neither. Also, bump

Harvard and Columbia are your biggest reaches, then duke, Vanderbilt, NYU, UVA, Wake Forest, UNC, UGA, VTech in that order. Don’t know anything about UT sorry. Good luck!
Chance me back please
