I'm on the path of finishing all but 3 classes for my CS B.S. by Spring or Summer 2012. It's the Senior Design Project separated into 3 classes, but unfortunately it starts only in the Fall and they have to be sequentially taken. This holds me back 3/4 of a year just to finish 3 classes.

Of course this is the departments decision. If I have to wait that long, I just have to wait. But does anyone know what I can do about this? I am going to CSULA (California State University of Los Angeles). Is there some way I can convince the school to offer the classes every quarter?

You mean CS 496A/496B/496C (2 quarter units each) in the CSULA catalog, of which only CS 496A is listed in the fall 2011 schedule?

The catalog also lists CS 491A/491B (3 quarter units each) with the same course description, but the schedule does not list it for fall 2011.

Can you start CS 496A now so that you can complete it by spring 2012?

Is it possible to do the same thing as supervised independent study project under the CS 499 course number, so that you won’t have to do it over three quarters starting in the fall?

I guess I’m somewhat surprised that this is a surprise to you. Didn’t your faculty or department advisor point out that this would be an issue? My daughter’s course schedule has been set for her major requirements since she was a freshman to make sure she’d get her classes completed in time.

Thanks for your response UCB. I’ve only started on most of the prerequisites for 496A this Fall 2011, so I won’t be able to take 496A yet. From what I remember, they haven’t updated their site yet. 491A/B has been changed into 496A, B, and C… which sucks, from what I am reading on the website, it looks like 491A and B used to be offered consecutively throughout the year. I hope they can also offer 491A/B as a substitute.

The supervised independent study project sounds like a good idea. Who should I talk to about that? The department chair? Or the dean or somebody? I don’t want to **** anyone off by going to a higher-up…

@CO mom: This is because, I just switched over to CS just recently and I went by the information on the website… but then I just found out that the website’s info is updated. They told me that I am supposed to go by the department’s handbook (which is updated). It’s been months, and it still isn’t updated. Things got worse when the school, for Summer quarter which just passed, barely offered any courses at all. I only got to take 1 required course instead of the many I planned to take.

Perhaps the instructor for CS 496A/496B/496C would be willing to supervise you doing a project equivalent to that done in CS 496A/496B/496C for 6 units of CS 499 over one or two quarters? But you would also need approval from your major adviser and department to make that substitution.
