Problem With A Professor

So, I need some advice. What would you guys do in my situation.

For one class, I got really unlucky. I was sick for both the midterm and the final. I went to UHS for both times. For the midterm, everything was ok. I retook the midterm and did well. For the final, I got sick again (it was my last final), so I went to UHS again and got a note. They checked me out and said that yeah, I wasn't fit to take the exam.

So then I told the professor, and he got very angry. He accused me of cheating and of pretending to be sick. First of all, I told him, UHS checked me out, and I think they are aware it is finals week and people might try to do that. Second of all, who is he to say how I feel. Third of all, who is he to accuse me of something that I would never do. It is insulting. I have very good grades and have worked hard, and I just happened to get unlucky twice, and it happened to be for this one class.

Well, he said that he really doesn't want to, but he will give me a retake exam. Which, of course, is not a problem. My problem is, the exam will be an essay. So, he could just give me (and I have no doubt this professor is capable of doing something like this) a bad grade, which would be 50% of my grade. And, there would be no way for me to prove that I deserve a higher grade, since its not a math test or something like that.

And, this class is a single class, so there aren't any other professors that could grade it or anything. I emailed my academic advisor and asked him what I should do. What would you guys do?

You emailed the adviser, if there is anything to be done they will tell you. There is not really anything you can do besides hold onto that UHS note in case you need it to prove you were sick and ask to see the exam later if you don’t get the grade you’re expecting and if he keeps them so you can see how you were graded. I doubt he would mark you down, if he wanted to screw with you he would have tried to keep you from taking the exam. There is really nothing you can do about something that hasn’t happened yet, so don’t sweat it, take the exam, and see what happens. I am sure there are grade grievance procedures. Just don’t lose that note from UHS.

What he might do, though, is give you a harder prompt. So be prepared for that possibility. I have had professors that routinely do that for make-ups to discourage students from BSing excuses on exam day.
