Problem with fafsa

@warrior481 that’s what I would do. File early…and plan to amend as close to Fwbruary 1 as possible.

But you do need to get the financials from your parents! This includes incime as well as any assets (bank accounts, for example).

And check to see which schools require the Profile…and those deadlines. The Profile has additional information you will need to have to complete it.

Not the main point of this thread but isn’t Bucknell a CSS Profile school? Do you also need to file a FAFSA form?

Yes- FAFSA is an application for federal aid (like subsidized loans, Pell Grants, federal work-study, etc.). Many schools will require both the FAFSA and the Profile.

@adlgel @purpleacorn what is the css and how do i know if the schools that I applied to will require it?

@warrior481

Go,to the financial aid section of each of your college, websites. The required submissions and the deadlines for, the, will be clearly listed on each website in the financial aid section.

For Bucknell EDII or RD, the CSS Profile is due 1/15/16. Go here to learn more about the CSS Profile.

The CSS is a different form that some schools use to determine financial aid awards for accepted students. It has a different methodology for evaluating need than the FAFSA does.

@thumper1 got it. Thanks& quick question, earlier you had mentioned something about irs data retrieval tool & having to wait 2-3 weeks for it? What exactly is that?

@adlgel where can i fill it out? Is it free?

@warrior481 See the link I published in post #25. You have to pay a fee to send it to schools, similar to the way you have to pay to send your SAT score reports.

Also as an alternative to going to each school’s website, you can go here to see which schools use the CSS profile. But once you know which of the schools that you applied to require the CSS profile, you will still need to go to each school’s website to find out their deadlines for submission.

First…the CSS Profile is administered through the College Board (the same folks who do,the SAT). No it is not free to submit the CSS Profile. There is a charge to send this to the schools.

Second…the IRS Data Retrieval Tool links yours and your parents completed tax returns to the FAFSA. This makes it possible to make sure the numbers on your FAFSA match those on your tax return. Actually, if you get your taxes done early (in your case, this doesn’t sound possible as you have January deadlines to meet), you can link to the DRT and it will import your income and tax information right to,the FAFSA form.

When I send my fafsa to my 15 schools in the beginning of january, they are recieving just my estimations correct? And then once i get all my stuff, i resumit it to those 15 schools and that is a final submission? @thumper1

Yes. But you can only submit 10 at a time. So…do,the first ten…wait for them to process…then you need to go in and delete schools, and add the additional five schools…and submit again.

When you update…remember to do all 15 schools!

How many of those schools are Profile schools?

Is this your list?

What are the other six schools?

Bucknell, Quinnipiac, Syracuse, and maybe Hofstra are Profile, schools.

Where are you an instate resident? You have a bunch of public universities on your list.

http://www.bucknell.edu/ApplyingForAid

this lists FA forms needed and deadlines for Bucknell

Also your dad’s total income from work and unemployment plus your mom’s income from work will be listed on one tax return, if they file married filing jointly.

Your income from work will be listed on your own tax return

@thumper1 i will message you my list.

@thumper1 isent you a list of my schools

The problem I see has less to do with your father’s income and more with acceptance and/or affordability.

If you are accepted to Bucknell then since they meet 100% need (as they define it), it should be affordable.
But with your grades and scores that might be unlikely.

If you get into U Conn (or other publics on your list) and you are OOS they will not offer much need based aid other than anything you qualify for from FAFSA. And you won’t get much merit with your stats.

Do you have any safeties on your list, where you are guaranteed to be accepted and can afford?

@mommdc yes i am from MA and have plenty of safeties.

Accepted into Syracuse but appealing financial aid increase around 6k since that is the difference between my EFC and Syracuse EFC. What are the chances the school will increase grant from 32k to 38k? Parents are divorced and non custodial divorced in May and now on single income and broke. This was explained on CSS but thought I should appeal for a little more since both parents live check to check.
