So i just submitted my app and I by accident put “the amherst” three times in my essay. Is this going to hurt my application!? I did it by accident; the rest of the application is amazing.

You mean you just didn’t capitalize Amherst? Or “the” is a misplaced definite article? Something like that? If so, don’t worry about it. People who read essays see typos. Yours won’t be the worst. :)

When my son applied a few years ago, he wrote a nice Common App essay. He asked me to proofread it, he asked his dad to proofread it, he proofed it multiple times and so did I. It all looked great. He hit “submit”. I went to print out a hard copy of his common app, and there it was LARGE as life, a missing word in the very opening sentence. How did we all overlook that? Somehow you knew it was supposed to be there so our brains just read it in. Funny how you just can’t see those things until you hit “submit”. ;)

Anyway, don’t worry. It’s not going to be a deal-breaker.

Yeah, I had a typo or two in my essays and I was fine.

Great! thank you so much. I wrote “the amherst” instead of amherst. I proofread it so many times I just must have missed it. I just don’t want them to think I’m using it from a previous application for a college that has “the” in their name. Like one sentence I wrote “The amherst has many…” So, you don’t think it will be a deal-breaker?

They no doubt see MANY essays that are recycled for many different colleges. Many students apply to a lot of schools, and no one expects them to write a raft of entirely distinct essays for each application.

It’s just a goof, and what they’re looking for in essays is what they can learn about you from them. It’s all about the content. So… I’m no expert, but I’d say this isn’t something you need to worry about.
