...Problem

Alright, I'm looking to transfer to UMD next year because I decided engineering is not for me. The only problem is, I go to Georgia Tech, where gpa is a hell of a lot lower then at most anywhere else...would my low gpa be a problem when I try to transfer to Maryland? Even if everyone else here gets the same low gpa?

Oh, and to raise the gpa a bit, I'm considering not taking some of the engineering courses next semester...would they see that and think I'm not trying ...should I stick with the low grade engineering courses?

I'm familiar with Tech (I used to live in the South before I headed to So*Cal* for school) and it is notoriously hard to get "good" grades there; meaning that a low 3 at Tech is considered very good and anything close to a 4 is like revered-"OMG you're a genius" status.

I'm sure UMD will take that into account. I think UMD is not the same caliber as Tech, so rank-wise aren't you transferring "down"? I think you might have a pretty good chance. UMD admissions officers aren't oblivious. They'll know what kind of college you're coming from, and what sort of classes you took, and they'll definitely take that into account when they make a decision.

Thanks, yea I guess I am transferring down overall wise. But UMD has a very good kineseology dept compared to tech that has none.

What's your GPA?

If Engineering is not for you, I think it makes complete sense to take non-Engineering courses for the balance of your time at GTech - not just for GPA, but to explore other interests, complete distri requirements, etc. etc.
