ey guys
I am planning to buy a mac pro book. I heard from someone that theres a problem using mac at UVa i.e it doesnt work gud with the wireless network. I am an international student and would like to get a clear picture about using a mac run notebook or one with the windows...is windows always a better option??

I have a student at the University of Virginia that has a Mac Powerbook and has had no problems whatsoever.

cant be true, getting access to a network or wireless point is not OS specific.

I certainly don't want to give any misinformation, but he used his Mac Powerbook both semesters and did not have any problems getting on the network.

Macs should be fine - dunno about the Power book though.

Hey..guys these lines are from a UVa student....thats why I asked this question...
"i bought my Dell laptop online. cavalier tends to be expensive and you
don't
need the UVA software. Dell is most popular, though i see a fair number
of
ppl using apple. there are some problem with using apple coz they're
not
always compatible with UVa's wireless network. i can ask my friends who
work
for ITC. apple isn't worth the money unless you're into multimedia."

SO PLEASE CLEAR MY DOUBTS NOW!!

My daughter is a second year and has had absolutely no problems using her powerbook with UVA's wireless network.

UVA's Cavalier Computers actually offers both Macs and Dell PCs, so I am quite confident that both computers work equally well on the UVA network.

The only real issue with Apple computers is that some software that may be needed for a specific class may not be compatible with OSX, this has not posed a problem with any classes my daughter has taken to date. She did run into the need to use Microsoft Access for one class, but there are plenty of computer labs on campus with that software loaded that can be used for a specific project such as this.

this is outdated 10 yr old macphobia data, todays macs are equal to or better than a PC and just as reasonable if you know what to buy. the most popular browser on college campuses is quickly becoming firefox, not even IE. firefox works just as well on both.

To 66472. . . Why after reading your last post, would you say that my statement couldn't be true about a user having no problems with a Powerbook?

wahoofan, It would appear that his comment was in reply to the OPs question, not your post.

whaoofan, i agree with you, macs will work fine.

I'm disappointed to tell you that my Mac has not been working very well with wireless lately. It would always ask for a "WEP password" until I take it to an ITC helpdesk and get it fixed.

what type mac do u have

Maybe the problem was a user error not and not an actual operating system/software malfunction?

Powerbook 15 inches. It's been driving me mad and I've had to install the stupid ITC ceritficates and do all the configurations again every so often. A user error like what?

The ITC certificates are a MAJOR pain in the ass. Seriously, who's gonna pirate internet from UVA? I don't get it. They make things so hard for people.
