Firstly i want to ask if it is true that the pronoun modifies the noun right before it?
Secondly, if by the meaning in the context, we are able to know the noun to which the pronoun refers, is that pronoun still considered ambiguous?
For example: the man told his son to take the car to the service station because it needed gasoline. Here by the context we know that "it" modifies car however the error is "it" for "it" is ambiguous. How so?

The referent of a pronoun does not need to be immediately near the pronoun. The closer the pronoun and referent are, though, the greater the clarity.

A grammatically ambiguous pronoun is one that can refer to more than one referent, based merely on a technical reading of the sentence. For example,

The hammer fell on the glass table and broke it.

However, context does inform our reading, so true ambiguity occurs when a pronoun could logically and grammatically refer to more than one referent. The above sentence is logically clear, so the reference is unambiguous. Logical ambiguity, as you might guess, is not perfectly objective; the SAT does a good job making the questions fair, nonetheless.

This is a case in which “it” is grammatically ambiguous but logically clear. The SAT would not consider “it” wrong in this case.

Thank you so much so if the pronoun is gramatically ambiguous but logically clear, it wouldnt be considered an error?
The example sentence above however is wrong with “is”, according to the answer key. But i took this question from an unofficial test somewhere so i guess the answer key is wrong :D

Spoken like a true grammarian. You clowns out here in Korea who masquerade as “star” teachers and charge $200 an hour making your clueless students draw triangles and circles inside reading passages (no need to mention any names, but all the Koreans know who I’m talking about) should be ashamed and actually teach something instead of practicing extortion and fraud and threatening to sue others for defamation of character. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
