Problems with Mybook

So, I know this is a shot in the dark, but I'm willing to take any chance that might fix my Mybook. Files have disappeared from my Mybook, but when I scan recovery programs like DiskInternals NTFS Recovery, they show up. My laptop just can't find them. However, using said program to recover my files, it only recovers the folder structure and none of the actual files. When I try to recover my photos (most important part seeing as I have four years worth of photos on that thing), they won't recover. Anyone have any suggestions? I really rather not turn it over to pros who charge $100/gig, seeing as my Mybook is a 500 gig device. Sigh.

Well until you know what you're doing I would not even touch the MyBook. Any single use given to the MyBook at this point will mean that it will make it impossible to recover the lost files.

How exactly did this happen? When was the last time it worked good? What happened the next time you tried turning it on? Any programs installed in between then? Any incorrect unplugging of the device? Any more info would help.

The last time it worked well was a month before I plugged it in. When I plugged it in again my files had mysteriously disappeared. Just like that. =) It turned on alright, but files were just gone.

I've since then solved the problem. Throwing the USB cable across the room and connecting my harddrive to my laptop via SATA through the express card slot in my laptop, and then running chkdsk /r on it has recovered most of my files. Running it multiple times recovered all of them, to my best knowledge. However, this will only work with laptops that have an express card slot.
