My S was accepted to Dartmouth and waitlisted at a few others, including Penn and Princeton. So I send in the deposit to Dartmouth by May 1. Now what happens if on May 15 Penn calls and says there is a spot open and he must decide in 24 hours. If S chooses Penn and sends a deposit to Penn on May 17, is he still allowed to stay on the waitlist for Princeton and must he immediatley withdraw from Dartmouth and other waitlisted schools? If Princeton calls on May 20, 2010, and says there is a spot open, can he also send a deposit there?

Yes. Putting down a deposit at any school does not bind you to withdraw from a waitlist at any other school. If you accept a place off a waitlist, it’s good form to inform the college where you previously had a deposit that you no longer plan to enroll, but you don’t have to take yourself off any other outstanding waitlists.

Don’t hold your breath, though. It’s hard enough to get taken off one waitlist. Two isn’t unheard-of, but it’s awfully uncommon.

Thanks for the 411
