Processors: AMD or Intel

What processors are your computers using?

AMD rocks. I've been using it all my life, since my first computer in 2002. Currently, I have Athlon1800+ in this machine.

Advanced Micro Devices.

Are you on an Athlon XP? or Athlon 64? The new Core Duo 2 has already benchmarked the dual core AMD processors. :( Lets hope AMD gets back on their feet with a new processor soon.

I'm using a P4 2.8 ghz (1mb cache & 800 fsb) which I bought off eBay for $100 like 1-2 years ago.

My old computer had a Pentium 4 ,but it was only 2.5 ghz. You should try AMD, they have way better performance on their entry level-entertainment level processors. As I said, Intel is releasing a better processor than the dual core AMD.

PS, I like your SN; Smarter Child.

Haha...try IMing me.

Anyway...I would probably have gone to AMD, but my motherboard is a socket 478..and I don't feel like paying money just to switch...I don't do any gaming or stuff like that.

You just have a computer for general home use?

Gaming PC= AMD most other apps=INTEL

I have a family computer...which uses a celeron 1.8...its a desktop...for the parents....all the other siblings have their own laptops...and i have my desktop

my desktop has A64 3200+ clocked to 2500MHz, just picked that one two years ago because all the P4 prescotts were too darn hard to cool down and too darn unstable to overclock on air cooling, and i didnt really feel like buying water. right now i'd say AMD's a64s, especially the dual-core X2s have a bit of a beat on intel's pentium Ds, but intel's conroe (desktop analog of mobile yonah core) is gonna be out pretty soon, and that baby looks promising.
as to laptops, i would NOT buy a laptop with turion or sempron, intel's core solo/duo beat their analogs in performance and battery life hands down. well, i guess the only laptop i'd buy that has a turion in it would be acer ferrari 4000, just cuz i'm a hardcore formula 1 fan :)
PS i seriously laughed out loud when i saw this topic: on a russian forum i go to sometimes they have multiple threads that are like 300+ pages long about what's better, intel or amd :)

Intel frequently has the most powerful processor money can buy, but AMD almost always has the best processor for the money. Why buy Intel for $400 when a slightly less powerful AMD processor is $150?

It's no surprise that retailers like Best Buy have AMD chips in half of their machines now, while a few years ago Intel dominated the market.

I have an Athlon 64 3500+ currently, my last computer had a P4 1.6ghz.

That isn't true. AMD Athlon 16 FX-62 Dual Core costs around the same price as Intel's current flagship processor;Pentium Extreme Edition. The Athlon 64 FX-62 has way better performance.

This is an interesting post. I have an ancient (5 year old) 1.25 GHz AMD Athlon, and for a long time now, AMD's had the better (more effecient/better price for performance/watt) CPU.

Of course, Conroe (which comes out tomorrow) is what most computer nerd is talking about and has been talking about for the past 3/4 months. The FX-62 (the current best processor on the market) costs $1000+. Intel's going to destroy that for less than $300.

The Conroe XE is the competitor to the Athlon 64 FX. They are priced the same at $999. The normal Conroe processors will not pass the Atrhlon 64 FX, but the normal Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 Processors.

I just built myself a new system with an Athlon 64 3500+ for $650 and it runs Oblivion (just about the most graphic-intensive game on the market) on ultra high settings perfectly without lag, not even OC'd yet. I think the processor was only around $100 To get the same power on an intel it would have been almost twice as much if I remember right.

i seriously doubt that. post the config please

"The Conroe XE is the competitor to the Athlon 64 FX. They are priced the same at $999. The normal Conroe processors will not pass the Atrhlon 64 FX, but the normal Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 Processors."

This is incorrect. The top of the line Conroe processors are expected to perform better than any current retail AMD processor (939). AM-2 isn't expected to help much. AMD is working on switching to a new line and Intel is expected to hold the performance crown for about a year (I think).

I currently have a severly overclocked (almost 1 ghz) single-core Opteron (939).
