I did not mean to imply the UR is not a great school. I am sure it is top-notch. I was just trying to put the music department in perspective. Someone already pointed out that Eastman is the top-dog in the music arena in Rochester, so that perhaps the music department at UR is not as strong as other departments, only because Eastman is right there. One has to be realistic -- and I am sure it is true that opportunities to have lessons with any Eastman faculty is slim to none, unless you are highly capable (which is possible, I suppose). All I meant was that if music is really important to you and you want lots of performance opportunities and maybe the chance to have private lessons with a faculty member, there might be other schools that have better music departments for that purpose. In no way did I want to disparage UR! By the way - my son will not hear if he is accepted until March. I am not bitter - just realistic. The odds of being accepted are slim to none for most applicants, I guess. But if you don't apply and audition, how will you ever know? He gave it his best shot!

violinmom --- kudos to your son for making the effort and setting his sights high. My son toyed with the idea of auditioning at Eastman, but decided he just could not devote the proper amount of time to an "Eastman level" audition during his senior year. He has auditioned at the state university's school of music, and has an audition coming up at another school...but nothing at the conservatory level. I believe I understand the point you were trying to make, and I think a lot of large state universities have an excellent school of music (not just a department), which many excellent players can be admitted to (Indiana Univ is certainly an example). My son doesn't like mega-size schools, however, so that's how we ended up on this quest for a small to medium-size school with terrific humanties and a competitive music program (instrumental). It can be very difficult to find.

Thanks for the additional info, weenie. And I'll suggest to my son that he email the conductors and inquire about their repertoire from the last several years.

yeah...Ithaca and Syracuse are also supposed to be good for music programs - I learnt this from a trumpet virtuoso who applied to Ithaca,Syracuse, University of Maryland and various others. Ithaca's supposed to be Eastman level supposedly.

suman, you still have braces? i thought i was the only person my age left in the world who still has braces. will you still have them in college? i'll hopefully get mine off by then. yeah, i'm cool.

by the way, i'm becca from new jersey right outside of nyc and i was accepted ED and i want to maybe major in psych but i'm not sure yet, and i also love to sing. yay! can't wait to meet you all next year!!!

I'm not really procrastinating since I haven't had school since Wednesday, but I'd like to inform everyone that it was -42 degrees yesterday.
I'm probably the only person who's looking forward to Rochester's "warm" winters...

yup. still got em on. i just got em on in august so i'll prolly end up keepin em on for a bit...idk...u can calculate. my teeth aren't that bad, it's just there was this little gap in my front teeth, but it's getting really close already..so hopefully, it will all be done by this august. that would be awesome. idk, my dentist goes a lil agressive on me haha.

wow. -42 degrees?? UR has a good heating system right? haha. we should have an ice skating party...i really want to learn how to ice skate. u guys know how to? procrastinating? i've been doin that ever since i got my UR acceptance letter, but somehow i'm keeping up my grades above "sea" level.

amm ya..yesterday it was 15...its not as bad as people think...i love the cold air...its very refreshing! The people from down south should bring their heavy coats though, cuz it might take a long time to get used to the cold weather.

haha...down south? ones from south jersey should be fine right? i mean we usually get pretty mild winters but some winters can be pretty chilly, just not like below 20 i think...well, i'll just bring one just in case. u prolly never know how bad it can get anywhere right?

i"m still debating. i heard gilbert was better than others. idk. and susan b was good if u wanted food. also, i heard gilbert and hoeing had more space than susan b. so, i think i might go with gilbert, but i'm gonna decide that when i visit.

pshh... u silly americans... i used to live in saint petersburg.. and it would get down to -20 to -30 degrees C. and it would snow. every. single. freaking. day. (thank god i moved).

well, u don't have a choice. u wear a lot more layers of clothing. 4 to 5. including on ur legs. it takes about 30 minutes to dress/undress in that kind of whether

and then u come here and can wear shorts all through the winter. it's kind of cool.

Post 60 baby! i have to make an exception to my last post...mild in the sense that we don't get all that much snow but it does get quite a bit chilly.
