Another parent gave us a list of area schools that have specialized support for different learners. There are undoubtedly others. Some of these schools accept updated NeuroPsych testing in lieu of or in conjunction with the SSAT.
Caveat: some of these support programs incur additional fees, adding 5-20% to the standard tuition.
Beaver Country Day, Chestnut Hill, MA
Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro, NH
Cushing Academy, Ashburnhsm, MA
New Hampton School, New Hampton, NH
Proctor Academy, Andover, NH
Winchendon School, Winchendon, MA.
We added Lawrence Academy in Groton MA because they offer limited academic support and their 9th grade program teaching learning skills and organization is highly regarded.
Here’s a “Pro Tip” suggested by the AD at Thayer. If you live in MA and your child attends public school, they take the MCAS test. If you feel those scores more accurately reflect your student, send them in!
We know kids who did SSAT prep for two years (including an intensive summer “boot camp” while our son took it “cold.” He asked to take it again February (which the schools will see) and many of the schools, if not all “Super Score” the result by taking the highest score for each section.
Received as a message. Why not put it in the thread? If the school has a Learning Program, they generally want the NeuroPsych, whether in conjunction with SSAT or in lieu of.
I’d actually love it if we could have a new sub-topic of either “hidden gems” and/or “academic support”. I’ve asked, it hasn’t happened. It seems like there is a definite divide on the page between people that are here to get into the most competitive schools and those that are here to find the right fit for their kid that is probably not getting into a top school.
I’ve started some about Academic Support in the past. I think we tend to be a group of parents looking at the same schools. I’d love to hear from parents/students that have attended these schools, but we don’t hear much from them. A subtopic rather than just a post would lead to more of a “history”. Especially when you try to respond to older posts and get messages that “original poster commented over a year ago, so I"m going to close this post”.
I bet @skieurope would be amenable to considering a pinned thread on the subject of Learning Support. It could include info on schools that focus on helping kids who require lots of accommodations and help as well as more competitive schools that have dedicated specialists for those who require extra support.
