Productive summer despite bad GPA?

What engineering related activities could I do in the summer after my Freshman year in college if I can't get an internship (and summer school is too expensive)?

Like are there any competitions going on that I could work on to keep me busy and maybe boost my resume?

Or any summer engineering programs I could go to or engineering camps that I can work at?

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

additional info: I'm thinking Mechanical right now, but electrical also looks interesting. And so does an economics/business minor

Isn’t it kind of late for that now? Classes end in 3 weeks for me.

Find a professor doing research in something you’re interested in. Go talk with them and try to work out a deal to get involved somehow…

You could also just go sit-in on summer classes that you’ll have to take in the fall… Do the work, study for the exams and take them (but just don’t turn them in at the end of the exam period - this will also give you a good study guide for the fall). You’re going to have have to bring up your GPA, this would help.
