So I am giving my two week notice today and am wondering what products should I buy using my employee discount. I have a laptop, so I am going to buy a camera, a laptop bag, and NCAA 07. I cant buy a TV since its too big, but is there anything else I should buy before coming up. Also on a sidenote, should I buy a laptop lock or is everything relatively safe inside your dorm room?

I've heard that laptops get stolen pretty often, so......and unless you're in Tisch or Stern, it seems that you'll have to pay for printing--maybe a printer would be a good idea. A small-ish one. And if you find such a thing for below $200, let me know?? :) hehe

It has been suggested that you buy a small file cabinet that can be locked to keep you laptop/valuables in.

Some ideas - iPod or iPod accessories, memory stick for the laptop, laptop cable lock, DVDs, CDs, desk lamp, maybe a mini-fridge if it's needed in your dorm.

ooooooh. good idea

I've never heard about laptops getting stolen often. Sure, if you leave it in public places unattended and don't lock your room, well... But I've never heard of anyone who took proper precautions and then had their belongings stolen.

Everyone can get free printing at the ITS computer labs, not just Sternies and Tischies. A printer's not needed, but sometimes nice when you're in a rush.

Get a laptop lock. Laptops are very easy to steal. I have some friends (not at NYU) who have had their laptop stolen from their dorm room. $20 - $40 is not much to pay. It will also come in handy in the library when you get up to get some books or a drink etc., maybe I am just paranoid.

what is a laptop lock?

wow! i think i'm going to get one--thanks for the tips! They seem really practical....I was imagining some sort of box...:)

So..it just wraps around the notebook? What's to keep someone from just picking it up...

You could say the same thing about any lock lindseygs (the picking part). The point is that it would detract stealing because it is a much bigger nuisance after stolen.

lindseygs, it doesn't wrap around the notebook. You run the metal end of the cable through the loopy end around some unmovable object. Then, you stick the metal end into the security port at the back or side of your laptop. The metal end will lock into the port with a key. It'll make more sense once you see one in person.

I think a laptop lock is going a little far. Laptops and all other electronics will be stolen as long as they are unattended in public places. Just dont let things out of your sight when youre in public and youll be fine.

i think maybe 1 or 2 laptops were reported stolen last year. you guys are a little over-paranoid about stuff getting stolen.

i don't think laptop locks are necessary at all...in fact, for a better part of the year, my suite's door was either wide open/unlocked with no one there. was i lucky? yes. was i stupid for doing that? yes. and if you're in the library and you want to get a drink or something to eat, you'll probably have to leave the library - there's like 3 vending machines in the study basement, so locking up your laptop there isn't really necessary.

oh, buy a nice set of speakers.

by laptop lock....do you mean case? locking the case...b/c i bought one

No, it's an actual lock that attaches to the security port on your laptop, much like a bike lock. I don't necessarily think it's going overboard, but I also think that you'll be ok if you don't have one. It would just suck though to lose a laptop. Not only is it an expensive investment, all your work would be lost.
