Prof Brown for 31A-How is it?

Im looking for an easier prof for math 31A, im willing to take 3A as well but I just heard 31A is easier...

easier? so you think calculus is harder than precalculus. It depends on what you think. check bruinwalk to see the professors ratings

how would 3A be harder than 31A. 3A is for life science majors - people who never actually need to use calculus. engineers and scientists - who the 30 series is designed for - actually use calculus in all the rest of their classes.

@binta

wut?

I chose brown for 31a this fall off of bruinwalk.

I mainly chose him because bruinwalk portrayed him as the “kind, old man” person, plus they said he was really helpful in office hours and always tried to make himself available.

I figure that’s a plus.

31A is not harder than 3A.

In 3A, you use this horrendous text, Neuhauser’s Calculus for Biology and Medicine. Hands done, the worst textbook I had to muddle through in my four years at UCLA. I hated how each concept had to be introduced with a biological principle and how the explanations were not easy to follow at all. With 31A, you get straight up, clear cut calculus. None of that biological mumble jumble. Stewarts instead of Neuhauser. I thought 31A was a whole lot easier. Just avoid Fattorini, because then you gotta deal with the evilness known as Mathematica.

What about the engineers, you ask? Most of them probably already took calculus in high school and passed out of 31A. I really don’t think there were that many engineers in my 31A class.

I’ve heard mostly positive things about Brown, but I think the easiest professor for 31A/B is Miech. Miech gives out these practice exams beforehand, and his actual exams look nearly identical. Too easy.

what do you mean? I was wondering how someone could think calc is easier than pre-calculus. But in the end it does depend on what that person thinks. Calculus is mainly two concepts with a lot of depth. Differentiation and Integration, while Pre-calc has a lot of concepts, a lot of different yet related stuff. SO it depends on what people think. I personally think Calculus is harder, and thats from my experience from high school. My friend got a B in Pre-calc and an A in Calculus. I got an A+ in precalc and a C+ in Calculus. So, now I feel stupid by justifying my response, but whatever.

Go with brown, from what I saw on bruinwalk, Im going to get him too for math 31a:)

i think you are confused about something. neither math 31A nor math 3A is pre-calculus. both are calc 1.

i dont know why you introduced pre-calculus into this discussion.

Does anyone feel the same way as thecheesecake? because i have heard someone else say that before. So Math 31A is the more straight forward kind of calculus? like more of a high school math class?

And in Math 3A, they try to relate it more to a biology?

For someone who has already taken AP Calc AB and BC, how hard would Math 31A be? I am also guessing like thecheesecake that the class cannot be too competitive because the people who did well on their AP Calc exams already passes out of math 3A/31A into a higher math class.

oh i got them confused. well my friend told me that she found the 31 series stuff easier than the 3, because i was about to ■■■■■ out and switch to bio major from biochem because i thought the calc would be harder, but its not really.
