Professional vs. Non-Professional Degrees

What's the difference?

Is there a difference in terms of earning potential and availability of jobs?

A professional degree is like law (JD), medicine (MD), or business (MBA). In most states the first two are needed if you want to practice law or medicine, while an MBA from a good school can help you get promotions in business. A non-professional degree is a research masters or a PhD. They’re more scholarly and intellectual.

You’ll make a lot more money with a professional degree (lawyer, doctor, businessman) than with a non-professional degree (professor, scientist, scholar), but the work they do is completely different.

With a non-professional degree like PhD, if you don’t stick around in academia, you can still make more money comparable to professional degree holders.

YAY! Thanks to both of you.

What about education? Is a masters in teaching considered a professional degree? What about masters in ed administration?

Thanks for the clarification.
