Professor Barry Mehler suspended for lecture

I am one who finds the man’s “style to be offensive [and] obnoxious” as well as inappropriate and, most of all, boring.

Doubtful. Our state legislature is unlikely to weigh in on that. They’re far too busy arguing with each other.

Hmmm, where are all of the people and organizations who run to defend professors accused of being racist, misogynist, or homophobic in the name of “freedom of speech”. I guess that, for some, “freedom of speech” only protects people who attack minorities or women…

He should have gone political - he would have more support in that case.

The professor may have been outrageous to get his students’ attention, but he wasn’t racist, misogynistic or homophobic.

Just a guess here, but maybe those people didn’t make gratuitous profanity laced comments and throw in comments suggesting they intended to engage in unethical behavior on grading? Hard to know exactly since you haven’t actually pointed to other professorial comments, but my guess is they may have been in the nature of serious academic debate? Just a guess since you didn’t provide detail.

Just pointing out, as noted in my posts up the thread, that FIRE is providing him with a lawyer out of its Faculty Legal Defense Fund.

Which is why FIRE has picked up his case.

All of which the professors is known to not have meant seriously.

I’m not sure, but as far as I understand, when a theory has been resoundingly rejected in the field, repeating it as a political statement cannot be considered “serious academic debate”. Bringing in a White supremacist to talk about his racist beliefs can also not be considered “serious academic debate”.

Also, last I checked, saying in an interview that U.S. is “better off with fewer Asians and less Asian immigration” is not serious academic debate.

FIRE is one of the few non-partisan free speech organizations out there.

Wow, actual examples, but no details or attribution. Glad fire is involved
