1) I have to be honest in my opinions on theism. I have respect for (most) practitioners of theism. Theism itself is absolutely absurd.

My argument is that almost all of Witzel’s work represents Hinduism (and the incredibly racist/sexist culture it fosters/was created from) as what Vedanta ultimately is.

“My argument is that Vedic philosophy is not atheistic, in that it very clearly articulates a conception of the divine.”

Wrong. This is exactly the sort of thing I’m talking about; ignorance of Vedanta spurred on by academic like Witzel who destroy good information.

Vedanta has NO room for a theist interpretation of anything. PM if you want me to delineate why, I’d be more than happy to share things I’ve spent years memorizing and learning. I’m going to say it again. There is NO room, either in resultant philosophy, or the text of the Vedas for theism.

“I interpreted the ridiculously non-specific OP (“Google search him; his prejudices are pretty well documented at this point”) as referring to Witzel’s position on the schoolbooks.”

Well, buddy boy, that’s not my problem. Especially when over and over before you finally posted this, I clarified precisely what I was upset over.

I think I’ll do it again actually:

I am a staunch atheist specifically because I practice the philosophy of Vedanta. In the same way that I cannot speak highly of ANY theology, I cannot speak highly of what Modern Hinduism is. I absolutely agree with Witzel’s assessments of modern Hinduism.

I am not happy that Witzel paints Vedanta as the same as Hinduism, either in practice or in philosophy.

I not happy that Witzel/co-authors frequently paint things in a 19th century Nordic superman invasionary light. (esp. When genetics disagrees) I am not happy that Witzel mistranslates, for motives I feel are 1)the denigration of race 2) the denigration of another ‘philosophy’ the verses in the Vedas.

I am not happy that Witzel’s long list of incredibly dubious actions and comments has never been investigated, or even casually examined by Harvard.

Hence the posting.
