Professors allowing the use of laptops?

Are you permitted to use your laptop in all of your classes? I know there are some in which you wouldn't even want to (math, sciences), but generally, would you still be allowed to open it up and have it sit on your desk if you wanted to?

How common is it for kids to bring laptops to class? And how many of you JUST take notes during that time, be honest please ;)

it really depends on the prof.
some profs have said bring your laptop, some have said dont. Some classes you just would feel out of place with a laptop. the smaller the class size the less likely people are to bring one ive found.
wireless internet it no notetakers friend.

most professors do allow the use of laptops, but few people actually bring them to class. usually it's actually more of a distraction because people will probably end up imming/editing pictures etc, as opposed to actually taking notes. in general, it's usually not necessary to bring your laptop to class, and i think it's just better to type up notes from your textbook after class instead.

All of the profs I've had at Davis let you use your laptop, but I almost always see people playing solitaire or using Photoshop. What I do is take notes in a good old fashion notebook. Then later on, I make study guides in Excel and put all the information that will be on the test together onto one piece of paper. I get to look over notes, type them out, and then have them all on a piece of paper. Its a great way of studying, for me at least.

I only ever took my laptop to class once - and that was because i needed to work on a paper that i had due for another class. :)

Do the professors actually care what you're doing on the laptops (ie would you get in trouble if they caught you on AIM), or do they have the mentality that they don't care if you're paying attention or not, it's your own fault if you don't?

Nope they don't care at all. You have to understand - there is very little hand-holding at college. If you don't go to class, screw around on your laptop during class, etc. no one cares. You are responsible for your academics, not the professor.

we had one kid in that same class who would come every class put his head down and sleep through the entire class. - he had his watch set to beep when the class was over to wake him up. our prof just laughed. one time we got let out early and we all left and the kid stayed there sleeping. it was pretty funny. :)

I'm not sure how efficient it is to take notes on a laptop. Some people do better that way, and I'm sure that is fine with any professor. And if you're sure you want to fool around on your laptop, sure you can do it.

But is it worth it?

First, think about how much you are paying to be in that hour of class. What is your bill for the semester divided by the number of hours you will be spending in class. For example , a class that meets three times a week for an hour, for 15 weeks, has 45 hours of class time. How much per hour are you paying for that class?

The professor may or may not care what you are doing in his class. Some professors may have a policy that you violate at your own risk. It's not high school, a professor will not confiscate you laptop from you. But generally there can be consequences.

What information might you be missing by not paying attention? what if you are called on in class? Would you be able to give a quality response? Class participaton is often part of a grade (basically a fudge factor for the professor to adjust the grade).

The professor might not say anything to you about what you are doing, but you can bet that except in the largest lectures, she will notice. And what might happen if you ever go to the professor for assistance--for an extension on a due date for a paper, or to change the date of an exam because you have a conflict, or--horrors--because you bomb on an exam or paper?

The professor or the material might be boring, but the professor is human too and will react as you would if someone ignored you for an hour while you were speaking to her.

To know if its allowed just ask the professor sometime before class. It will vary from one to the next. I personally never needed to use a laptop in class, though I did carry it around in case I wanted to work on a paper right after class. (also because of paranoia, I was scared to death it would get stolen lol)

I just come on in with the laptop. Nobody seems to care except when I was at my old school, this big grouchy lady in the back said that I was causing a distraction during a convocation (which was forced). I just told myself I was in college and that she was treating me like a middle schooler, so I kept on plugging away.

And no, I wasn't listening to the convo or taking notes. The speaker wasn't that great (which I had already known) so I played Blackjack. Other pastimes during classes/lectures include novel writing, Photoshopping, chess, and eBay (I once won an auction in high school :-P right in the computer lab and the teacher never saw it)
