Professors and Textbooks

Do they care if you don't have the textbook for the class?
(Going to have Scerri and Mochovakis[sic?] in the fall..)

Also, should I bring the textbooks to class (if I have them) on the first couple of days? Should I even bring them at all to class? (I mean, UCLA's pretty hilly... and I haven't exercised since I last had to take PE.)

[ As a side question... any must haves should I bring to the first couple of days to class?]

Usually you do need the textbook for the class. If you check with the professor first, its typically ok to use a previous edition, but it can be a real pain if there’s a missing section, or the practice problems are different. If its really that hard to get the book, its possible to share with someone else who has one, but its better to have your own.

Unless the professor specifically says “bring your textbook to class” I wouldn’t bother. Most people don’t even get their textbooks until the 2nd week of class, so that they can be sure they actually want to take the class before shelling out the cash for a book.

On the first day make sure to have a way to take down information. Pen/pencil/paper/computer/stone tablet/ect… They always go over office hours and grading info the first day and its stuff you don’t want to miss. (I recommend a pen and a spiral bound notebook personally)

Yes, lots of hills. It sucks at first, but you get used to it.

You don’t need a textbook for Scerri. If you ever want to look at the textbook for that class, ask a friend or go to the college library and check out a reserve temporarily (and if you check out like… an hour before the library closes, it’ll be due the next day).

for scerris class most people just bring the course reader and take notes in it during lecture. i didnt need the textbook for 20a, but i needed it for 20b, so i ended up getting it anyways.

I’m wondering, does 20B use the same book as 20A? And how much is the course reader for 20A approximately?

They use the same textbook. Course readers for 20A and 20B are about 73$ each (I think) and then you also need to pay for Thinkwell (30$).

The professors won’t care or ask you if you have the textbook, or even if you decide to come to class. This is college. No one will give a shiet if you go to class or do your work except maybe some concerned friends and your parents.

You don’t have to take the textbooks on the first day, and no one expects you to do so because they only go over the syllabus.

I only carry one textbook a day because I usually only have time to study one subject while i’m on campus. You can also just take the time to review your notes. I know a couple of people that carried a lot of their books everyday, but usually they never covered more than one subject a day. Books are heavy.

Just use Google to find an electronic copy of the newest edition if you need to.
