Professors, field trips, and celiac disease

Oh dear god... i've gotten in to some trouble.

Basically put i was supposed to attend a madatory field trip for a class today. I did not go.

Now before you jump on me because of this, i have been in pain for the last few weeks with it progressively getting worse. I finally got a diagnosis of Celiac's disease (which if you don't know is an autoimune disorder where your body cannot detect that wheat and sends out antibodies to attack it, thus causing your digestive system to become a great big sore). I sent the professor an email saying i would not be able to attend class and the field trip (which was about 2 hours before i found this out). Basically my doctors want me to just rest through the pain because there is nothing i can take for it (and the only way to help it as of this point is a gluten free diet).

So the field trip was earlier today, and as i have said before i could not attend. It costs a major portion of my grade, however, there would have been no way for me to go due to being in severe pain when i walked (which it would also involve getting in and out of cars, stairs, etc).

I am going to speak with him on it when i get back to school (currently i am at home). I also have an appointment with my Disability counsler on monday (which i will also bring up with her).

I also plan on meeting with the dean on this if he counts it against me (as i have a written doctors excuse).

Any thoughts?

This is a no brainer-- health center should have contacted your professor, advisor or given you a note-- any one of these would have been sufficient. An alternate assignment would be provided. Go speak to the department chair or email ASAP.

This makes no sense- of course your prof knows that an alternate assignment is necessary. Your ADA compliance officer can also assist you.

Focus on getting better- stress cannot help.
