Professors won't write LORs until after deadline

I'm finishing my Masters next May, and applying to schools for my PhD in either environmental engineering or geochemistry. I've finished all my applications, sent in transcripts, GRE scores...etc but most of my LORs won't be in on time. I've got a friend with the same problem. I send reminders through the application web pages, through my own e-mail account, and they don't seem to find it that urgent.

Will missing the deadline for lack LORs deny me acceptance if everything else is in? For example, GA-Tech has a deadline of today, but I'm still waiting on 2 LORs. Anyone else experience the same problem?

No worries you will be fine even if your LORs are submitted one day before the admission committee meets, which is usually late Jan early Feb. The schools require LORs to be there before deadline to make it easier on the admission office assistants who have to process the documents and upload hard copies, etc…

In that case, is the online system typically still open, or do they have to e-mail it directly to someone in the department?

They must use the online system, but it’ll still be open.

Don’t worry about it too much…most schools expect late LORs anyway (professors are pretty busy). If your professor hasn’t sent in the LOR by the week after the deadline, then you might want to remind him/her again.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think the holidays are also keeping my recommenders busy. I’ll remind them once more after New Year’s.

One of my recs is still not in. I have sent him like 3-4 reminders and every time he responded with “I will do it over the winter break. Everything will be fine.” Some of the online system for submitting recommendation letter shut down already too. For example, UT Austin. I just hope everything actually works out fine.

talk to the schools you applied to i am sure they will understand as it is not your fault.
