I am an international student who will hopefully be a freshman at the College of Engineering this year. Due to a tightly-packed schedule, I can't take all the AP exams I want. Given that I will be arriving at UIUC on August 19, will I be able to take the following proficiency exams?

Calculus 1
Calculus 2
Chem 102

I am already familiar with the course material and do not need any special preparation. Thanks.

Possible. Each department controls their proficiency exams so you need to check with the Math and Chemistry departments to see what you need to do – some just announce date and you just show up, others require pre-registering. Usually the exams are given just before classes begin (some) or during first week of classes.

Your assumption that you are fully familiar with the material may not necessarily be correct. Proficiency exams are generally very similar to final exams for the course as taught at UIUC. Thus, you also need to search for the syllabus for the course as taught at UIUC to see what subjects may be covered. In other words, there is a potential of some questions on the exam that you may not have personally covered in a course you took in school.

Thanks for your advice. I have checked the math and chemistry departments’ websites, and apparently the Calculus I proficiency exam will be conducted just the day after I arrive on campus and won’t require any registration (which is not the case with Calculus II). The Chem 102 exam also does require registration, but I’m not sure when it will be administered. I’m still a bit confused.

I’ve looked at the syllabus and have found it to be quite rudimentary by my country’s HS curriculum. That’s, in part, why I am so desperate to take those exams :).
