Proficient in other language?

What exactly does “proficient” mean in this case? If I took Spanish as a class for 3 years, can I put that put that in the list? Or do I have to be very fluent in Spanish for it to be counted as a language I’m proficient at? Also, I speak two languages equally often at home (chinese to my parents, english to my siblings)…but the common app will only let me pick one language…what should I do? Does it matter which language I pick?

Unless you can speak another language as easily as you do english then you can not put it down. So for you it would be Chinese and english

Thanks for answering. What about the question that asks for the primary language spoken at home? Does it matter which language I pick (since I speak both Chinese and English equally and the common app will only let me pick one language for that question)?

what you probably should do is put English down as your main language and add the stuff about Chinese in your additional notes. That way you avoid the complications of having to take a TOEFL. Unless you are fluent in Spanish, dont include it as a language, because schools will see it on your transcript.

Okay, thanks!
