I was reading the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, and it had a long feature about the college sports scene, using Ohio State as it's main focus. However at one point they have a chart showing the wealth gap between "Division I powers and paupers." For the Athletics Overall, Virginia was cited as 1 of the 5 examples of "the rich," with a revenue of $92.7 millionm and a profit of 0. I was wondering if anyone (Dean J or current students) knew if this was specifically because of how UVA atheletic department works and there's no real profit, or if this was mearly how it panned out that the revenue lead to a net 0 profit. For what it's worth, the numbers come from the U.S. Department of Education based on the year ending June 30, 2006.

I'll dig up some information for you this weekend. I've seen some interesting numbers, but I can't cite them at the moment (kinda busy).

The athletics department is very well-endowed and has a number of generous benefactors. Additionally, football and men's basketball are quite profitable. I don't know that it's a coincidence that revenues=expenditures...it is a non-profit organization, after all.
