I want to go into software development but didnt make the cut into the computer engineering department at the univ. of washington.

I did get into the EE department though...and I think it should be fun in any event .But...how much programming will I receive? There is an embedded software concentration, will this be enough to be a competative programmer? Will I be at a huge disadvantage without a CS/CE degree?

EEs are employable in the software industry, which honestly cares more (on the whole - there are obviously companies that are exceptions, but most of them will take EEs) about your skills than what your degree is in. So I don't think you'll be at a huge disadvantage (though it would have been nice if you'd gotten the CSE degree).

You will have more or less the same engineering skills since CSE or EE/CS has it's core classes in EE. The differentiating factor are the classes you might take in CS that deal with languages, which you can sure learn on your own if your interest in CS is as you make it to be. Learning languages on your own is very doable..learning engineering on the other hand will be much more difficult without a structured class, in which case, you will already have the engineering courses under your belt.
