Programs at Yale for HS Juniors?

So I'm a Junior now and am interested in applying to Yale this fall. Anyone know of any programs I could attend--not necessarily summer--to visit? I heard there is one in the humanities section, but don't know quite where to find it.
thanks.

J. Shi--I'm confused about what you're asking for. Are you asking what classes you can sit in on if you visit the campus? Are you asking if high school students can enroll in Yale classes?

If you're asking about the sitting in on classes, the admissions office should be able to help you. You can sit in on any lecture class and they'll be able to help you with which classes are offered, where, and at what time for the day you visit.

Well, I'm a Junior now, and I live too far away to go sit in on classes. Is there any programs in which I could apply for to visit or such?

J. Shi--Still confused about what you are asking. I think we are using terms that the other person doesn't understand.

When I talk about "sitting in on a class", I am talking about an experience where you go visit the Yale campus for one or two days and attend a class or two in subjects you are interested in.

To visit the Yale campus for a day as a potential applicant, you don't have to apply. You just show up at the campus. It is best to find out what time the campus tour and admissions sessions are offered on the day you visit. If you want an interview with the admissions office while you visit, that is the one thing you need to arrange in advance. If you want to sit in on classes, the admissions office can help you as I described in my previous post.

Yale has summer sessions that you apply to. These are programs where you spend several weeks on the campus and take classes. The regular Yale student body is not in session at this time.

Please let me know if this makes sense. I am confused about whether you want to merely visit the campus or if you want to apply to a special program.

Yes, I want to apply to a special program at Yale. Are there any that are free?

The only special program I'm aware of for high school students is the Yale summer program. They may give financial aid for it, but I don't know. You can research this program online.

Is anyone else aware of programs open to high school students?

How hard is it to get into their high school summer program?

If you are interested in politics, I believe that the Junior Statesmen of America holds a symposium over the summer at Yale. I believe they have a month long program where you take courses on government and US history. A cheaper alternative is a week-long symposium where instead of taking courses, several politians visit the campus and give speeches...its a more hands-on experience. These programs are sponsored and run by JSA though, not by Yale. Yale is just used for its facilities. But, it's a great experience if you are interested in politics and it at least gives you the chance to live on the Yale campus and gives you a better feel for the school, if that's what you are looking for. I'm not sure if that helps.

I spent a summer at Yale for JSA and it was the deciding factor in my decision to apply to Yale. It was the greatest summer of my life and I got to know the campus better than I would've had I just gone for a weekend which is what I was planning to do before. We stayed in Timothy Dwight college and had classes in WLH, both of which were amazing. My room was huge and the people were great. I also got high school credit and it brought up my GPA and class rank. I would really, really encourage you to apply to it. I think the deadline is still open. If you have any questions about it, PM me.

How hard was it to get into JSA? How many people were in your group at Yale? Any down sides to the program?

JSA is a good thing to look into.

AdmissionsAddict, have you heard of the humanities symposium at Princeton? I think the original poster was looking for a similar thing at Yale.

Yes, MallomarCookie, you are dead on. So is there any such program at Yale?

I would say JSA is easy to get into if you are willing to put the time into your app....recs, transcripst, essay, the works.

I mean, they have a waiting list, but if you show that you really, really want to be there, you can probably get in.

But my class was 20 kids and the whole program was 250ish kids....again, the best experience of my life thus far.

It also tests you, mentally. I wrote a 16 page paper on the balanced budget, something I never would've done at my hs....it really opened my eyes to a lot of things....other people's ideas and cultures and politics in general....and also myself...I learned I could do things I never thought possible.

yale has their own summer thing besides JSA. If you can pay and their is space you can go and they do offer financial aid .. just access it form their website

I just did JSA Yale this year. Stayed at Rosenfeld Hall right across from Timonthy-Dwight. It was amazing. dorms totally owned (probably because it was an upper classmen suite or something). While I didn't apply EA to Yale (I would've...), I did get into Columbia early. And I'd say it definitely helped in my case since I'm a science/math student and this added another dimension onto my application.

On the other side:

It's a joke to get into.
It costs a lot of money.
