NSLI-Y Arabic alumna here. What NSLI-Y language did you apply for?

The YES program is a year-long program that focuses on cultural education in countries with high Muslim populations. Similar to most NSLI-Y programs, you’ll live with a host family and participate in cultural activities. You will attend a local high school and likely have language lessons in the local language. You can go to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, or Turkey. (However, to go to Morocco, you need to reach a certain proficiency level in French.) 65 scholarships are available. I encourage you to do more research on this program by reading blogs of YES alumni (https://futureexchangestudent.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/programs/high-school/yes-yes-abroad/). If you let me know what countries you’re interested in, I can send you links to blogs of students who studied in those countries.

The Youth Leadership Exchange Program is quite different from NSLI-Y or the YES program. It’s only 3-1/2 weeks long and I don’t think you spend much time learning the local language. The focus of the program is on democracy and civic engagement and you’ll be talking to local youth about these topics. I don’t know if you live with a host family. It looks like there’s only scholarships in Nepal (http://www.mwrif.org/235/magee-womancare-international-current-initiatives-south-asia-youth-summit) and Indonesia (Private Site). However, the Nepal program is only for people from the Pittsburgh area.
