Progressive Rock

I will listen as soon as possible and get back to you. :slight_smile:

Have you listened to the band Tool before?

Yeah, some of their stuff from Aenima and Lateralus. They’re pretty good.

I prefer Opeth, though.

I like both. I feel Tool is more rhythmically complicated, but Opeth makes longer songs

I like Opeth’s vocals more if I recall correctly.

Both bands are highly applauded on RYM.

Has anyone listened to Godspeed You! Black Emperor?

Nope. I have never heard of them

They’re a late 90s early 00s post rock group (genre that evolved from prog). Listen to “Storm”, a 23 minute epic of instrumental mastery.

Will do!

Been getting into Can and Soft Machine lately. Great bands for any prog fan.

This isn’t really prog, but does anybody else think that Casey Lee Williams should have a great career as a vocalist aside from RWBY?

I am waiting for the new Dream Theater album. Looks like it will be some massive concept album :DDD

Did anyone listen to Coheed and Cambria’s last album? That’s probably my favorite of their’s. If you haven’t listened to them, you’re missing out.

@AMan236 Will do!

I was listening to Swans last night! (SFTB)

@Hermit9

Be sure to tell me what you thought. It’s actually Coheed’s first non-conceptual album (as they say), and a lot of their fans didn’t really like it or were indifferent to it. For me, it fits well with my transition from High School to College, especially Eraser.

Also, yeah, Swans are awesome. My favorite of theirs is the Seer as you could tell from my pic. I love how they defy all genres and simply identify as music.

I have never heard of any of those bands
Clearly I need to expand my horizons more :stuck_out_tongue:

I have also been listening to The Mars Volta a lot. Their music is insane.

@TheWaffleMan149 Soft Machine sounds like a mix between In the Court and WYWH. Listen to Out Bloody Rageous by them. They’re late 1960s to early 1970s.

Can is a famous German krautrock band, absolute legends. Listen to Halleluwah (yes, with a ‘w’) for a masterpiece. Same time frame as early prog (late 60s early 70s).

Swans are post-rock, which is a derivative genre of prog hugely popular in the late 90s and early 00s that is more classical/ambient based and less rock-based. I’ll let @AMan236 give you recs for them.

Two other great post-rock bands are Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Storm) & Sigur Rós (Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása).

@TheWaffleMan149

I have to say Coheed’s best song is Blood Red Summer. It’s dark content is juxtaposed by its very lighthearted feel and I always end up singing the chorus to myself (“What did I do to deserve THIIISSSS!?”) From their latest album, I’d say Eraser is a great song. And You’ve Got Spirit, Kid is also very catchy (though I hear the story behind its conception isn’t all too flattering for the band)

As for Swans, ooo, that’s a tough one. I’d say the Seer Returns is probably their most accessible song. The Seer itself is a very horror-centric album, so it works well for the Halloween spirit. Another one I can recommend from them is Lunacy (side note: did anyone watch the trailer for the new Macbeth movie? They used the song perfectly. ) Mind you, it takes a while for the lyrics to start. A lot of their songs are drone-ish in nature. Lots of repeating beats, sometimes to the point of it getting annoying. Their older work is also pretty good. White Light From the Mouth of Infinity is probably my second favorite of theirs.

And other post-rock musicians that are good are Godspeed as @Hermit9 said and Mogwai.

I heard that Coheed is similar to Rush? @AMan236
I’m also a huge fan of Porcupine Tree

I just finished listening to Out-Bloody-Rageous @Hermit9 Their keyboardist is BEAST.
Currently listening to Nine Feet Underground by Caravan
