Project Management Vs Accounting Degree

Hi all,

I just registered for this site tonight but I have been a LONG time viewer of various questions and have received alot of insightful knowledge on subject topics but now I come to you all with a question. I am currently an accounting major going for my bachelors and dont get me wrong, I really enjoy accounting and some of the reasons I chose this field other than enjoyment are its an in demand field (they will always be needed), job security, and it seems like a field where I can move up within a company and earn a decent living. The question came to my mind as last semester, I took a Project Management course and I absolutely LOVED everything about the course from learning MS Project to the discussions of the material in class so it got me to thinking about a career in this field. I began doing research on it and noticed this field received many mixed critisms. One of which was getting into the field was difficult because many times, one with a PM degree doesnt walk into a PM job, the PM's are usually experienced in their field (such as those with IT degrees, engineers, etc.) and someone with a PM degree really isnt going to be very useful in a project. The second thing that I wonder about is job security because it appears that some of the jobs that I've been looking at that are currently out there appear to be contract jobs but Im looking to be hired on full time. When asked what it is I see myself doing in the future, I want to work more on the business/technical side as opposed to the construction side of project management. I see myself working in a business structure and overseeing lets say new products that are coming out to market as well as working with and improving processes of businesses. I wouldnt mind doing a little on the side of designing say remodels of certain businesses because I have a creative mind but thats more into construction which Im not really to into. Accounting on the otherhand seems like quite a versatile degree as well because I see myself working hard in an office and communicating with different departments to ensure that business needs are met to the best of my abilities. There will always be a need for accountants and from what I hear in the real world, they all seem pretty happy with their jobs and earn a decent living to support themselves and their family. On the other hand, I dont know any project managers personally so I cant really accurately forsee what my future will be after graduation if I pursue that field. I am taking my last few general courses now then after this, I will be full blown accounting or full blown project management so any advice would definitely be helpful and I appreciate any tips I could get from you all. Have a blessed day and look forward to the responses!
