Last year (based on CC posts) UD began to notify OOS applicants by Email of acceptance on 3/10/12. This was followed up by official notification via snail mail with a very impressive large packet. Notification appears to be staggered, so not everyone will likely hear the exact same date. I would suspect applicants will begin to hear around the same time this year. The March 9th-12th time frame has been pretty consistant for at least the last several years. I guess there is a possibility this might be delayed slightly due to the fact that UD extended its primary application date to 1/15/13 due to Hurricane Sandy. We shall see. Good luck to all applicants.

I really think they are going to lose some good candidates by making them wait so long. They would be better off with a rolling admissions process, where you accept the top students as early as possible, deny the students who have no chance (which gives those students more time to apply to additional schools), and let the average students wait until you have processed all the applications.

Don’t they notify the top students for the Distinguished Scholars weekend before March?

A very few OOS applicants may hear from UD earlier (like around mid-Feb) as they are invited to interview for Certain Named Merit Scholarships UD gives out. In addition applicants who applied under any type of “ethnic consideration” may receive a lettter earlier in March inviting them to attend a get together for students in this category with a comment that they will soon be getting some “good news” from UD. Students in both the above situations can assume that they have been accepted. All OOS students are notified officially via the process I outlined in my first post on this thread.

MTNest I was thinking the same thing… Guess we shall see!

89wahoo: older DS was invited for the Distinguished Scholars weekend so I seem to recall we received his decision in February. I don’t know if they have changed it up since it has been 5 years. We shall see what happens this go around with DS13

we are OOS and D2 is very interested in UD’s School of Nursing. She has already been accepted to the shool of nursing in the other 5 schools she applied. However after a visit to UD and an interview with an alumnus she tells me this is her top choice. UD is the only school we are waiting on and with the mid-March acceptance date for OOS students it does put things on hold. We know the merit aid offers from the other schools and we have even done some School of Nursing open houses at schools where she has been accepted, like Pitt and Case Western. The people we have talked to that have attended UD all love it and we are eagerly waiting…

I have heard that sometimes decisions come out as late as April 1st, I’m guessing though that just happened to be the people I talked to? It would be fantastic if they came out before that date I would be so happy! Do honors program decisions come out at the same time as the school’s decision?

It does appear that some students do receive acceptance notices later in March. Honors acceptances are included in the initial admission notification. If you applied for the Honors program and this was not included in the admission decision then you can assume you were accepted to UD but not to the Honors Program. Honors Program students are invited to a special Honors student’s breakfast that is held the morning of the Delaware Decision Days on 2 saturdays in April.

One more thing which I think can be helpful to some students whose initial decision is being offered a place on the “wait list”. If you are in this situation and still want to pursue UD admission I would recommend accepting a place on the “wait list” ASAP (like the same day if possible). UD historically, while this is variable, tends to accept a fair number of students off the “wait list”. While many students do not hear about this until after May 1 UD has begun in the past to accept students off the “wait list” in April and even late March. Some students who accept a “wait list” position also follow this up by submitting right away another letter to UD indicating their extreme interest in attending UD including why they feel this way, what they feel they can contribute to the UD student community, and how they feel UD can be helpful to them in attaining their career goals. While of course neither of these two things can ensure acceptance off the “wait list” IMHO ones odds of acceptance are not negatively impacted by pursuing these courses of action.

Best of luck to all applicants.

Mwallenmd…I appreciate your insight in prior posts regarding UD, particularly on the nursing program. Can a student still do the Honors Program and nursing or is that too much. Also what are your thoughts on the OOS merit aid, I thought I read that the majority is for in-state students.

Students certainly can be involved in the Honors Program while in the Nursing major. I don’t have the exact number but I would estimate that there are 6-10 Nursing students in the Honors Program in each Nursing class. So it can be done. Our D choose not to apply for the Honors Program because she had other interests (joined a sorority). However she did take some Nursing Honor Courses in clinical areas in her Jr. and Sr. years which looked very good on her transcript (helped her land a great position following graduation on an ICU unit at Cornell Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC). It might be possible to be a Nursing major and be in both the Honors Program and in a sorority but this might be stretching it a bit (unless you don’t need any sleep at night).

Actually UD gives out more OOS merit aid in total than most all other Flagship State Universities (actually the total amount of merit aid given to OOS students is probably more than the total for in-state students). The amount appears to be highly correlated with an applicant’s standard test scores. The problem lies in the fact that 2/3rds of the students at UD are from OOS so the money is spread out over many more students than at most public universities. I hesitate to predict amounts but I do know some OOS students last year with SAT scores of around 1900-2000 that received merit awards in the range of 8-12 K per year. I guess we will just have to wait and see for this year. UD states that what it charges for tuition for OOS students is only 85% of what it costs UD to teach each student. From this perspective every OOS student gets an indirect scholarship of 15%.

Hope this info is helpful. Best wishes for your D’s acceptance to the Nursing Program (and to the Honors Program if she applied for it).

@Mwallenmd Thank you for all your insights! One more question, I don’t recall seeing Distinguished Scholars anywhere when I was applying, is that something that UD just gives to you or was there a seperate app? Thanks!

Beginning with the class of 2014 you first have to be identified as a Dupont Scholar. Once identified as such there is a separate application you have to complete to apply for the $2,500 Distinguished Scholar award. Only Dupont Scholars are now eligible for this award. Hope this info answers your question.

I obtained the following information from UD’s Common Data Set for 2011-2112. I thought this info might be helpful for applicants to be aware of.

Percent and number of first-time, first-year (freshman) students enrolled in Fall 2011 who submitted national standardized (SAT/ACT) test scores. Include information for ALL enrolled, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who submitted test scores. Do not convert SAT scores to ACT scores or vice versa.

I’m sorry the columns are somewhat confusing but I couldn’t send it in a better format translation. Hopefully you can interpret it

It is definitely a drawback to be an OOS applicant at UD. Several colleges that DD is considering have housing advantages to committing early. Waiting until Mid/Late March to commit to some schools may mean undesirable housing choices (or even no housing at all). Besides senior-itis setting in, she is desperate for this whole decision process to be over!!!

@Mwallenmd -Thank for sharing the acceptance info but what I would really like to see is the historical acceptance data for the OOS pool of applicants. I assume that the acceptance criterion of the Delawareans determines the remaining acceptance criteria for the OOS. Do you know if they have ever carved out the OOS accepted applicant pool data from their Common Data Set? At this stage, I think that data is more relevant to the RD applicants waiting to hear back. Thanks again!

@Mwallenmd Is the projected date March 11th for all OOS applicants?

MikeBM3:
It is my “best guess” (based on time frames from past years) that acceptances will begin the weekend of 3/8/13 or possibly beginning 3/11/13. They do not send out all acceptances at once and it appears to be staggered over approx. 1-2 weeks and maybe even a little longer. Email notification initially is my best guess followed by snail mail packet but it appears that some students initially find out by a Congratulation message on their MyUD portal. In past it also appears students (every year) have been initially notified by any one of these methods so we shall see what happens this year. Best of luck to you and all applicants.

pushfwd2013:
Unfortunately the UD Common Data Set info I presented is not broken down by in-state verses OOS. You can get some OOS stats info by going to UD’s Admission website and some much less specific data is provided there (from the class of 2016) for OOS students in areas of HS GPA and SAT/ACT scores. It is broken down by RD students and Honors Program students. UD states it generally accepts 45-55% of OOS students that apply but this acceptance rate is not uniform across all majors. Some majors have much lower OOS acceptance rates. For example the OOS acceptance rate for Nursing is probably less than 20%. Most people would be of the impression that OOS student stats are higher than in-state students accepted but I am not aware that UD publishes separate data for in-state applicants so it is difficult to verify this or to gauge the degree of difference, if any.

Here’s what i did last year. DD had 3 top schools, UD and two others. The other two notified us in November of her admission and scholarships. Both housing preferences were based on “first come, first served” I submitted the $500 deposits to BOTH of those schools to secure her spot as she was still deciding and housing was going to be a big factor at both. Both schools offered 100% reimbursement of deposit if notified by May 1st. Once DD got her UD acceptance, scholarship info and we attended an accepted students day in March. I got back the deposits from the other two schools I can tell you it was worth the peace of mind knowing she was high up on the housing lists for the other schools. Both checks came quickly and efficiently. These schools expect that as they try to corrale their kids in early so there was no issue with her asking for the return, it seems to be very common.

I was just on a chat with UD and she said that the decisions will start going out first part of next week 3/11 (and that portals will be updated as soon as a decision has been made).
