Total applicants = 37026 (new record)
Total early decision (ED) applicants = 2993
ED applicants accepted = 996
ED acceptance percentage = 33.3%

Total RD applicants = 34033
Freshman class of 2012 = 4200
RD acceptances required = 4200-996=3204

At this point the University must decide how many of the 34033 to accept to achieve 3204 who wish to attend. This is the "yield". Over the past 6 years, the yield averaged ~37%. Last year the yield was 38.3%.

Assuming 38% yield, the University must accept 8431 from the pool of 34033 to achieve 3204 who decide to attend.

At 38% the RD acceptance percentage will be 24.8%.
At 35% the RD acceptance percentage will be 26.9%.

GSP is normally included in the overall totals for the Freshman class. It is not possible to determine acceptance percentages for individual colleges from this information and the University never releases them (although the Deans of the Colleges occasionally do).

Do we know why the ED acceptances decrease pretty significantly from last year, by about 120 people and 4% when the applicant pool wasn't very much larger?

I think they are planning to make '12 somewhat smaller than '11 for two reasons:
1. '11 is too big, a result of underestimating the yield.
2. There is a general feeling that the colleges should be a bit smaller than they currently are.

I think I'm going to faint... What troubles me the most isn't to get rejected, but to get rejected while others from my school who will get in but wouldn't even want to attend

That is a sad consequence of the college admission process. No college is immune from this. Even at Harvard, one acceptee out of every five chooses to go elsewhere.

well, far from it...
But, hopefully, Stern won't be making any major cut backs... and hopefully, next year, they'll be looking for liberal females who apply ED, play tennis, are theatre participants, and politically active.

Great example of "One man's trash is another man's treasure." And don't faint. :)

996 accepted ED? Two girls from my D's HS applied ED and both were accepted. Good for them! All the more power to kids who know where they want to go.
