Prom Dress - long or short?

For those of you attending prom this year - are you opting for a long or short dress? What do you think are some of the big trends this year in dress style? For those of you 5' 2" or under, what do you think makes a "shorty" look great for prom?

Thanks for your input!

My 5'5" D has chosen a short dress. Her group of friends will wear both short and long styles.

My 5'8.5" D has chosen a long one. Her group of friends are all intending to wear long.

Initially, I wanted a short dress, but I ended up opting for a long one. The short ones that I tried on were either way too popular (the short, ruffly Jessica McClintock dresses that everyone was bound to wear) or way too homecoming-ish.

Personally, I prefer short, but you have to stay away from, as illusionsx said, the popular and homecoming styles.

I'm ~5'6, and I opted for a long dress.

I actually ended up buying a brown evening gown instead of a prom dress, because if I'm going to be spending all this money on a dress and matching shoes/shawls/purses, I want to be able to wear it again to formal functions without looking like I'm wearing my high school prom dress.

I'm doing the same thing, ChickenSoup... but mainly because I find all prom dresses HIDEOUS. I want a really classic dress... that's still unique... and vintage-y without being obnoxiously so. Shouldn't be too hard. (sarcasm!)

I'm really tall (5'11), so I thought about a shorter dress, but I ended up finding a long one that was long enough, and that's what I really wanted, so I'm pleased with it. Most people go long for prom because it's a pretty big deal at our school...it's at a really fancy hotel in San Francisco and whatnot...tickets are outrageous though...it's ridiculous.

well, my friend is going to prom, even though we aren't seniors, but she's like 5'11". She's wearing a long, dark brown, BCBG dress.

for us shorties, I think it just depends on your frame. I feel like for me, personally, a long dress would overpower me, and make me look like I was drowning in fabric. Some can pull it off though. The MOST FLATTERING DRESS is an above-the-knee, black, with an A-line skirt. If you have nice legs, I'd say go short, but you have to be careful to make sure it still is formal enough.

yeah, like alamode said, legs matter. last year for prom this one shortie looked ridiculously cute in a short dress, but most ppl just wear long i think. it depends on how the shape complements your body, not just your height.

I'm 5'2". (I had to get ready backstage after a performance... hence the really attractive backdrop hahaha) That picture makes me look wide and cankley... but I digress. My mom made my dress for me.

I suggest long...it shows elegance, and shows what a special occasion it will be. Normally, you wear short ones, but wearing long ones really will make you feel special!

Yeah, I'm pretty short, and I'm worried about 'drowning' in my dress. Buuut... the prom committee wrote in our special 'prom directions' that we're supposed to wear long dresses. Pfffft.

I'm 5'3'' and I wore a long dress... it was lovely.

I'm 5'5" and I wore a short dress. I heard that long ones get stepped on.

Personally, I'm quite clumsy and uncoordinated, ergo I did not buy a long dress. Maybe I will learn to function with more grace and poise (and therefore look into buying a long dress) by the time Senior Prom rolls around next year...hahahahh..

I like to be traditional and wore a long one to prom this year. Well just wear whatever you're most comfortable in. I like long dresses for prom but not the whole shawls and everything. A little cleavage wouldn't hurt

Do you have nice legs?...

Are you referring to my post? I meant cleavage as in your front or back, not really your legs.

if you have well shaped legs, go for a short dress. if you have long legs, a slit looks good. unsure then go with a full length. if your well endowed, you dont need to show any cleavage. if your somewhat endowed a little cleavage would help. if your not yet or poorly endowed, go for a dress with a belt along the belly or that otherwise compresses the lower torso and an open back.

I'm 5'2", and I actually just turned down a guy to prom, but I was planning on wearing my concert gown which is... floor length :)
