Prom: To go, or not to go?

You can find dresses on sales racks anywhere for like $30. And, to be honest, I HATE to dance...but I had a blast at Prom. My group of friends just hung out and had a wonderful time. Go, worst that can happen is you didn't have fun for 4 hours of your life. No big. OR you have memories and pictures that last forever.

i disagree.

i think high school has been amazing, and i'm completely looking forward to prom.
why does that somehow mean im going to go nowhere in life? i have plans for my future, and they don't include a supermarket.

I think CamaroLover is just referring to people who fool around in HS, not necessarily at the prom.

My 1/5 of a dime: Prom sucks as a single. Ditto the music, ditto the proctors or watever you call them, ditto the phony speeches "He is a great benefactor" BS, and ditto the food. I could have spent those few hours constructing my helicopter.

I never end up with a date for dances, and yes, I am generally the nerdy quiet type. But I love dancing, and going with a group of friends sans dates is a bunch of fun, arguably more fun for many than going with actual dates.

My best advice to give you if you do end up going to prom is that if you don't know how to dance at all, pretend that you do. No one cares if you dance ridiculously; the more ridiculous, the better. But if you don't end up going, its no big deal at all. Going to prom though, whether it is a good or bad experience, will at least give you something to talk about. Not going to prom, you might regret this decision a couple years down the road

Go. You are only in high school once. You don't have to spend a lot of money or buy an expensive dress to have fun. The after parties are usually more fun that the dance anyway!

How many people already have their dates?

Lol @ the bitterness of some posts.

Going to prom does not mean you're going to work at a supermarket. It means you have at least something of a social life and you're not waiting on college to make things just 'happen,' like college parties.

I always thought dancing was supposed to be sexual, but that might just be because I'm Latino and just about all of our dances scream sexuality.

If anyone finds dances you'd find at proms overly 'promiscuous,' I'd hate to see that person at the Latino Night dance.

honestly, i dont get what all the hype about prom is.... corporate "holiday"? maybe it's a cultural thing, like people in north america are "raised" to believe that if you don't go to prom GASP you will die regretting it.
if you do decide to go, dont go with an awkward date who, because you're too nice, couldn't turn down. some end up spending the evening trying to hide from them :P
let's see if my friends can convince me to go this year lol

I can't decide on if I want to go either. I don't dance (when friends are dancing, I stand there and laugh) and wouldn't have a date. I like the idea of dressing up, but the money for prom could be spent on vacation... Oh and prom night is a valuable homework time! Geez, I'm a nerd.

I'm going for sure.

I'm going but I'm not sure with who. It seems as if my school is in a total frenzy to get every possible date before the next person. I was not expecting this, so I don't really know what to do.

prom is going to be so effing boring this year
last year it was okay, but as a senior i spent the year going to college parties, and prom at my loserschool won't compare.
last year i had to get a date from out of school because all of the guys at my school are too focused on their calculators, and for the whole dance, i was stared down by equally uneloquent girls who wanted him.

however, i'll still go. i mean, come on, when your kids are going off to prom you want to have something to tell them about.

^ calculators?

I'm in the same boat as the OP, except Prom is on my birthday this year. Even though it's my senior prom and I won't get the "special experience" or whatever, I know that I don't want to spend my 18th birthday doing something I don't particularly like.

So what I'm doing instead is just getting together with a bunch of my friends from my old HS, renting a fun convertible or something, and driving down to DC for dinner and a nighttime tour of the monuments. Way more my style, and I'll still have a fun memory to tell my kids.

Bottom line is, I don't think you should go just because "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience." I know I won't regret it, and I know I'll have a fun time anyway.

I didn't go last year when I was junior, and I honestly do not regret.
But I think if I didn't go this year, I would regret.
So my opinion: if this is your last chance to go, then just go.

I didn't go last year (junior) and I also didn't regret it, mainly because it was at a crappy place and the tickets were OVERPRICED and I didn't feel like putting more stress on myself because I had so much going on last year. This year, however, prom's going to be after finals, before graduation--during a time of relaxation, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be cheaper and at a better place. If you want to have fun, go for it! And you have to have a positive outlook too. If you decide to go to prom and have a negative mindset about it (i.e. "Prom's gonna SUCK", "Prom's gonna be boring") then it WILL be crappy and/or boring. I'm going to prom, and I'm going to HAVE FUN! :D :D :D

I'm really leaning on not going as well. Idealistically, sure, it'll bring me good memories, but hey, I can have great memories w/o prom too.
Why I'm leaning:
1. I know absolutely nothing "real" about my classmates. They might as well be strangers. Everything just feels icky and fake.
2. Prom is verryyy expensive, and I'm in debt.
3. I won't regret it when this happens:

"How old are you?"
"I'm 18; just graduated from hs."
"How was prom?"
and I'd reply " I didn't go...."
awkward silence
"oh, so...how's the frozen yogurt we're eating?'
"Oh wonderful - the thickness is perfect, the texture's smooth- and it's so unbelievably creamy; My god everything about it is so damn good! I love this frozen yogurt!"

I'm sure that yogurt will be so delicious; can't wait.

If you can afford it, I would tell you to go. I'm definitely not the type of girl that goes to dances and parties all the time, but I went to my junior prom with a friend last year and had a blast. I'm already making plans for senior prom. =)

^ where did yogurt come from?

I don't think I'm going to be going to my Junior prom. Here we have a junior/senior prom.

It's $30 for a ticket, and I don't have anyone to go with. All of my friends that are going are probably bringing boyfriends. I've never been to a school dance, ever. Prom is the only dance my school has.

The only thing I would enjoy about it was getting dressed up, and I can do that and go to the grocery store or something.

I don't think I'd have a very good time.
