Prom Tux

I am getting a black tux with a black vest for prom. I can't decided between a black necktie and a black bowtie. Which is more popular/widely accepted/better looking? Also, since I am unable to match my vest and tie to my date's dress, should I wear a handkerchief/pocket square to match with the dress color or is it awkward for the pocket square to be the only color in a black-white tux?

Hmm… Black necktie, but only because you decided to get a black vest. In general, bowties aren’t really paired with vests (we’re talking about the normal high cut vests… They’re fine with low cut waistcoats). However, bowties are usually more associated with the “black tie” tuxedo outfit, especially considering you’re going with the traditional colors. I personally prefer bowties with a traditional tuxedo (means no crazy blue, red, etc. colors). If you could, I’d go back and do a traditional tux with a black bowtie and low cut waistcoat/cummerbund

Also, no, do not match the pocket square color to her dress if you’re doing a black and white tux. That’s somewhat tacky. Either black or white pocket square. Rather, rely on the boutinere/corsage to match with her dress

^ He knows what he’s talking about… Also if you don’t know how to tie a bow tie, it’ll look like crap. Clip-ons look really bad too.

So that’s why women on CC like Whan…lol.

I wore a black tux, with a black tie and black high-cut vest. Looked just fine, and there were lots of people wearing bowties with the “traditional” tux get-up, but I stood out a bit (doesn’t really matter that much). Still looked fine, have fun :)
